Aorta comes from the Greek word ‘aeiro’ which means ‘to lift, raise, be hung up’, from the ancient notion that the heart is suspended from the aorta. It shares etymology with ‘aorter’, the name of the shoulder strap used by Greek hoplites to hang their swords.

Postoperative 30 day mortality for breast, gastric and colorectal cancer is 4 times higher in resource limited settings, linked not only to patient factors but also failure to rescue when postoperative complications occured. thelancet.com/journals/lance…

This graph is most interesting - complication rate is not too different (surgical and anaesthetic teams do the first intervention right) but recovery after complications is worse in low-income countries - a solvable problem - post op care - elegantly identified by this study!
Replying to @ewenharrison
Mortality in the first 30 days after stomach and bowel cancer surgery is 4x higher in low and middle income countries.
However, complication rates are similar across the world.
The ability to save people from commonly occurring complications is termed “capacity to rescue”.
