love this impassioned discussion of "Digger." differs not only in degree but in kind from the more narrow partisan quarrels over "The Odyssey." it's hard to discuss anything online in the US since if you venture any criticism of a work of art you are identified with "hating" it; nuance seems unknown. so many things are either/or: you are for/against. in life, nothing is so simple. one might admire the originality & audacity of experimental art but also find some fault with it. must all art be beautiful? must all music be Mozart? there are other music(s) & some of them crude, primitive, forceful, provocative & annoying. they may hurt the ear but stimulate the brain. in academic circles the most protracted critiques are made against work that requires close scrutiny because it is important. when nothing matters much, no one objects. especially in philosophy where the more depth to a subject, the more spirited the debate. & once there were poetry wars--crude vernacular upstarts of the 1950's vs. suave polished & rhyming verse of their older contemporaries.
