OFF THE SHELF PROP... Watching 'Star Trek Strange New Worlds' I was surprised and delighted to see Scotty wearing an identical magnifying/illuminating head piece to the one that I bought recently for close-up work when I'm making models. The future is NOW! 😎

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! To the amazing, and simply wonderful David Sterne, 81 today! I had the great good fortune to be treated to lunch by David when we met up in Hampshire a couple of years ago and we chatted for an hour. David played eccentric farmer Larry Bishop in 'detectorists'.

CRACKING LEGO, GROMIT! That was a fun build. It's a nice solid model of characters which suit the Lego medium, and a nice break for me from my usual resin/paint/glue messy model-making to build these fun, clean Lego kits. I'm already looking forward to making Lego Mario Kart.

DAYS OF HEAVEN (1978)... How have I not seen this beautiful, mesmerising film before? Gorgeous cinematography, gentle pacing, and sparse dialogue combine to make an engrossing and convincing period piece. Definitely a keeper on DVD (but hard to find).

CRACKING ON GROMIT... And the first Easter egg has arrived. Lego fun is just what I need after two fraudulent charges to my credit card and a blown electric oven in the past three days. Gotta love Lego!

When celebrity protest was costly and not done for naughty vibes and extra followers. 34 years ago this month, an Irish woman committed an act of defiance on American television that would make her one of the most hated celebrities in the world. She tried to get people to pay attention to children being abused by the very institution that claimed to be their moral guardian. On 3 October 1992, Sinéad O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live, one of America's most popular television programmes. She was 25 years old. Two years earlier, Nothing Compares 2 U had made her a global superstar. She had an extraordinary voice, enormous commercial potential and a future that could have made her fabulously wealthy. Every incentive in the entertainment industry told her to keep smiling, singing, looking pretty and making money. Instead, she chose to make people profoundly uncomfortable. She performed Bob Marley's War, completely alone, without instrumental accompaniment, changing the lyrics to explicitly condemn child abuse. At the end, she held up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. And tore it to pieces. "FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY!" Silence. The audience didn't know what to do. Neither did the producers, who had no idea she was planning this. Within days, the machinery of outrage was operating at full capacity. Sinéad had insulted Catholics! She had insulted the Pope! She had insulted religion! How DARE this young woman with a shaved head disrespect something so sacred? Funny how much more offended people could get about a torn photograph than about children being raped and abused by people entrusted with their care. Actor Joe Pesci subsequently appeared on the same programme and declared that, had he been there, he would have given her a smack. The audience laughed and applauded. A grown man threatening to hit a woman for protesting child abuse. Apparently THAT was entertainment. Madonna criticised her. People destroyed her records. Her career suffered enormously. Two weeks later, she appeared at Madison Square Garden for a concert honouring Bob Dylan. Thousands of people had come to celebrate a musician whose reputation rested partly on decades of songs about injustice, rebellion and refusing to submit to authority. And when Sinéad appeared, a substantial part of the audience BOOED her. For having actually rebelled. Kris Kristofferson approached her and told her not to let the bastards get her down. "I'm not down," she replied. And instead of singing the Bob Dylan song she had prepared, she launched into War AGAIN. What happened in the following decades? Investigations revealed extensive sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy and institutional efforts to conceal it. Sinéad wasn't attacking the ordinary believer who found comfort in religion. She was confronting the immense power of an institution whose moral authority had protected perpetrators and helped silence victims.

Patchwork Poppies is a field of blooms captured in ink using a technique that lets me roll one colour over another without mixing. I developed a solution using a little-known inking method to build layered, patchwork-like depth. rebecca-vincent.co.uk/produc… #PoppyArt #FieldArt #Printmaking

TILTING VIRGIL My current commission is for a replica Virgil Tracy puppet with the tilting rocket painting that transported him to Thunderbird 2. My client specifically requested that Virgil should be dressed in his Thunderbirds uniform, rather than civvies. WORK IN PROGRESS.

Laundry Day in Genoa, Italy, in 1928. This autochrome of the neighbourhood washing lines was taken 98 years ago by Hans Hildenbrand. It is a view looking down the Piazza dei Truogoli di Santa Brigida. It was taken using an early colour glass plate process and isn't colourised.

My dog Gadget and I had a strong spiritual bond which was forged at a pagan ceremony that he performed* in front of my friend Jenni at Avebury Standing Stones in 1998. *I bagged it and disposed of it responsibly in case you were wondering. #detectorists

It's such a special moment when the light first hits. Standing in the early pre-dawn silence, you watch the sky get fractionally paler and paler, until the sun suddenly breaks cover over the hills with a sharp flash and runs down the slopes into the valley, bringing brightness to the trees and the river and the path ahead. It never gets old. 📍 Peak District, England
