This is why other fields are so far ahead of education.
Today @Google, we published work led by @m_codreanu on AI in Science, drawing on 15 million Gemini interactions, 2,600 specialised AI models & a 600-scientist survey. What did we find about how AI is changing science? Read on...

Explicit instruction works. Education Schools Just Won’t Admit It.

The absolute state of this. Reminded of people's reaction to Michaela when it started: the whole "anyone doing something I disagree with in education must be morally suspect."

Again, these are bad people with bad ideas. Everything about what they are trying to achieve is bad.
Increasing learning is good, but not a justification for doing bad things. And it matters what kind of learning we’re talking about.

The Primer won't be built as a chatbot with a syllabus. It's an instructional engine.
And the goal Andrew describes - a tutor that teaches children how to think, not just recite - gets there by guiding children to mastery of their foundations through a personalized learning experience.
You can't think broadly with knowledge you don't have, so we're building Primer on the framework of Direct Instruction, the most proven method for acquisition.

The Primer
@amiklas
The best education has always come from one-on-one tutoring, but that privilege has historically been reserved for very few people.
AI could give every child a patient, adaptive tutor that grows with them over the years, beginning with reading, writing, and arithmetic, and eventually helping them learn to think and reason. For the first time, Neal Stephenson’s Primer is starting to feel possible.

Just spoke to the most incredible group of Stanford/MIT interns at @gauntletai about the science of learning and the future of adaptive learning platforms. Brilliant questions and thinking about hard problems around retrieval, spacing, interleaving, cognitive load and elaboration. The kids are alright 👏

Alpha critics: "Alpha kids don't read books."
Alpha School students: "Tiens ma bière" 🇫🇷
They read Tocqueville's Democracy in America, then debated it at his own chateau with leading philosophers - reworking his ideas for the age of AI.
Critics think AI-first schooling means less thinking. It means more. We're raising philosopher-builders.
Thank you @Brendan_McCord and @JohnathanBi for hosting 5 Alpha High students at Cosmos Feast at the chateau of Alexis de Tocqueville last weekend.
We are building new programming into Alpha High and Founders School to not just check off the humanities curriculum box, but because we believe that the world needs philosopher-builders and our students are best positioned to lead the way.
Watching the students deeply engage with the ideas from Democracy in America and connect the dots between Tocqueville’s observations and what’s emerging in the world today was an exciting preview of what’s to come next school year and beyond.
We also had a blast exploring Paris of course.

7500+ new cursive characters/words written on Scribble this week
We'll start rolling out to the Waitlist in the coming weeks so make sure to join it if you'd like your child to learn cursive this summer usescribble.com/waitlist

This is a must-read.
Education at scale is the biggest problem we need to solve.
Despite my being an AI Engineer, I wholly agree that universities categorizing AI use as legitimate scholarship, as long as it's footnoted, is wrong.
As @yacineMTB said, "You can outsource your thinking, but you cannot outsource your understanding."

Montessorium MAP growth for the year: 2x the norm in math, 2.8x reading, 3.7x language.
Our students who started behind are now on track or ahead. Our students who started ahead are more ahead.
My 6yo 20x’d reading (she was so ahead that MAP expected ~no growth) and 6x’d math.

The Timeback platform: the math is good, as are the vocab and grammar, but what I’m actually the most impressed by is how much factual knowledge 6yo learns from it.
Constant exposure to Things and Events and Times and Mechanisms. Continuously surprised by what she brings up.

@ flying colors, videos only take up about 1/5 min of each ‘learning episode’. the remaining 4/5 min is cognitive offloading to the student herself — pretrieval practice, deep note taking, retrieval, scaffolding, transference, etc.

Handwriting needs a comeback, and we're doing our part by making it more fun. ✍️
Scribble, our cursive handwriting app, is rolling out to @AlphaSchoolATX right now.
In the hallway today:
Student: "You're back! Can I get back on Scribble?"
Me: "Yes!"
Student: "Can I start now?"

We waste 90% of kids' time in school.
@shaneparrish asked the hard questions:
Why do $50K/yr private school students show up years behind?
Why did two-thirds of our high schoolers beg to skip summer vacation?
What happens when you finally give kids their time back.👇

Adults: Let’s ban AI in schools.
Alpha School students: Look at this awesome history app we built with AI.
Our history students spend 45 minutes a day voluntarily learning geography.
Every break, Every lunch... Same thing... GeoGuesser.
So we asked the obvious question:
Why doesn't this exist for history?
We built it.
You watch AI footage from a time and place in history.
Then you guess where and when it happened.
They love it.

If you're a game designer, software engineer, Marketing specialist, or anything adjacent to those roles, and you've been affected by the @EpicGames layoff, I'd love to chat about what we're doing at @AlphaSchoolATX and @Superbuilders.
We're out to accelerate education for 1 billion kids, just like you've all brought the love of gaming to more than 1 billion lives.
My DM's are open.
Sad news for Epic Games. Hope the efforts to turn things around can work. gamesbeat.com/epic-games-lay…

At Alpha School, motivation is everything.
I haven't been able to convince the 3 "not math/science" girls 👇to read Project Hail Mary - a sci-fi novel that celebrates problem solving, growth mindset, and science as the solution.
Maybe Ryan Gosling can. They've got tickets to the movie. We'll see if it leads them to the book.
