One of the most important, and most misunderstood, aspects of the path toward awakening is the process of individuation. It’s not about becoming an “individual” in the social-cultural sense, self-improvement, or adjusting your persona to fit into a society where pathology has been normalized. It’s not a self-help or self-actualization program. It’s also not about finding a career, manifesting your desires, or achieving your “dreams,” many of which are not even your “own” but are often the result of cultural and social conditioning or unconscious compensations for a disconnection from the Self. Individuation goes far deeper. It’s about shedding false identities and aligning with the truth of who you are beneath your persona and all conditioning. Failing to individuate can lead to a “midlife crisis” and all kinds of compensations in the external world, which have also become normalized and are even promoted and encouraged, as people try to avoid facing the pain, grief, and shadow material they have repressed for decades. Failure to individuate can also result in depression, loneliness, and a sense of disconnection from the world and, ultimately, from the Divine, because the call of the soul has been ignored and our true essence remains buried beneath layers of shadow material and conditioning. Individuation is also a significant part of preparing for the ultimate transition at death, becoming less identified with the physical body and persona and more connected to our immortal essence and the Self. As Carl Jung pointed out, not everyone is ready for it. It requires a certain level of consciousness and ego strength to engage in this process consciously. But for those who are called to go beyond self-actualization, it’s essential inner work.
