EXCLUSIVE: Elon Musk came to Donald Trump with the plan to throttle Ukraine’s use of SpaceX’s Starshield satellite internet network, sources have told the Telegraph. The tech billionaire made the proposal during the US President’s row with Volodymyr Zelensky over strikes on Russian oil refineries. ‘The reality is that they were both in it,’ a senior source said of Musk’s and Trump’s involvement. But after a night of carnage in Kyiv caused by the slowdown, Musk was alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe. The SpaceX boss then proceeded to tweet, blaming the US administration, and ultimately, President Trump for authorising the slowdown. ‘He tweeted out that he was innocent and that it was the US administration that did it,’ the source said.

New research reveals that Ofcom has made Britain an extreme outlier by enabling politicians to present TV current affairs shows. Out of 37 other European countries, only Malta - where corruption is notoriously rampant - & Iceland, have similar practices. theguardian.com/media/2026/o…

When the Guardian went on strike to protest the Observer sale, I became a de facto spokesperson. Later a Tortoise employee I’d never met wrote to me to cancel my 20-year contract. No goodbye & no pay-off. This is how they now take credit for my work..but write me out of the story

NEW: Reform UK’s James Orr and Dan Jukes cleared by internal party inquiry into whether they broke electoral law on foreign donations. An inquiry by Met police, who are presumably better placed to assess this, is continuing.

My reply to @JakeWSimons is below.
Let’s start with one typical example. The writer Musa Okwonga and I have rather lost touch over the years, but I remember him as a man of great intelligence, sensitivity and good humour. We met at university and, some years after graduating, travelled to Israel together to play in a good-natured writers’ football tournament. We had a good time and as I recall, he loved the country. Which is why I found his latest Substack essay so disturbing. “Genocide,” it begins. “We should probably start there.” Israel, he writes, is committing that worst of all crimes. Its troops are “using children for target practice”, its politicians engaged in a “process of revenge against the Palestinian population”. He compares its conduct to the Ugandan atrocities against the Acholi, his own people. “Genocide infects and corrupts everything it touches,” he writes. True enough. Only in the case of Gaza, Musa, it’s quite obviously not a genocide... New post. Link in first reply

Just a reminder, in case one is needed after reading this, it was Macklemore who got cancelled.
I wouldn’t normally listen to Ed Sheeran much - if at all. But I’m putting him on my Spotify playlist today. Not because I necessarily share his politics (or even know what they are). But because I object to the cancellation machine: the idea that artists must publicly endorse the approved political position - or face walkouts, denunciations and demands that their work be cancelled. Sheeran has made clear that he wants his concerts to be welcoming entertainment, not political rallies. That is a perfectly legitimate boundary. So, Ed Sheeran it is today. Well done, idiots 🙄

Not sure which one of these I am @IsabelOakeshott but here's a nice photo of me winning this year's Paul Foot award for investigative journalism.... for investigating Labour Together's smear campaign against.... journalists 🤨
More than 1000 journalists successfully applied for accreditation for @reformparty_uk party conference. Of three rejects, one broke the law; another has only one agenda; and the third is not a journalist. This is a non story.

NEW: It was a digital lynching. And the media is never going to hold itself to account for the role it played in Jason Arday’s death. But there are things we can do. This is a practical guide based on my own experience. Link below.

It's a pity Jason Arday wasn't a rightwing journalist arrested for beating his pregnant girlfriend. The obituaries would have been somewhat more sympathetic then.

I think this has probably shocked me more than anything else. The Times ran multiple ads trashing Jason Arday. This one reached 195,746 people & ran until Aug 16 - today. There’s a rearguard action to defend journalism. But this isn’t journalism. It’s monetised racebait.

Why was Jason Arday's plagiarism a front-page story, and not Johann Hari's? Or Dr William O'Reilly's? Because when white people do wrong, they're seen as individuals, and not stand-ins for their entire race.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Arday's case goes way beyond plagiarism. He lied on his bio, his credentials, he invented attacks on him, he sent police to shut down research into his own academic fraud. It ceased to be plagiarism case a long time ago. theguardian.com/education/ng-i…

Let's not kid ourselves here: the vast majority of his critics (not all) did not care one jot about the rigorousness of Cambridge's hiring processes or upholding the highest standards of academic research. (2/3)

They saw this as further confirmation in their eyes that DEI doesn't work. And he became the focus of all that impotent rage, anger and bigotry. The media acted like a pack of wild dogs and because of that a wife had lost her husband and two children have lost their dad (3/3)

A selection of articles published by The Spectator between August 01 and August 14 2026:
BREAKING: Jason Arday, the former University of Cambridge professor, has been found dead at an address in Battersea, according to reports. A spokesperson for the Metropolitcan Police said the 41-year-old's death is not being treated as suspicious. “Sadly, a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers," he said. “At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious. "The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit. A file will be prepared for the coroner.” More follows...

Ah the next stage of the Trumpian plan. When you’re likely to be judged as having done something wrong, attack the judge. Britain is not the USA. We will not fall for this playbook.
