I was born in France. I’m French. My father still lives in Paris, and I go back regularly. And the France I return to feels increasingly unrecognizable to me. This didn’t happen overnight. France spent more than 20 years making decisions on immigration, integration, border security and national identity that I believe fundamentally changed the country. But Macron took a bad situation and made it worse. After nearly a decade of his presidency, immigration and security have become defining political issues in France. And now the political backlash is enormous. Marine Le Pen is leading presidential polls. Jordan Bardella has become one of the most prominent political figures in the country. National Rally has built its movement around dramatically restricting immigration, strengthening France’s borders and challenging the political establishment that governed France for decades. Think about what that says. France has reached a point where millions of voters are demanding a completely different approach to immigration and national identity. I love France. It is the country where I was born. But I barely recognize parts of it anymore. And what scares me most is watching Americans push many of the same ideas that France spent decades experimenting with. Weak borders. Mass immigration without adequate integration. Treating concerns about assimilation as taboo. Pretending national identity doesn’t matter. France is now having a massive political reckoning over those choices. America still has time to learn from them. Do not wait 20 years to realize the warning signs were there all along.
