🚍Do transport systems contribute to the difficulties disabled students face with accessing what should be barrier-free education?
Professors @RBuliung & @RaktimMitra lead a recent forum at @TMUsurp to discuss the research—and offer possible solutions: bit.ly/3muun2h.
"Nearly one third of students viewed their commute as a barrier to their academic success."
Great article in TMU Today on the impact commuting has on academic success. These findings are from a study by Ryan Taylor & @RaktimMitra using StudentMoveTO data

“Student mobility is not restricted to
linear connection between home and
school but has complex web-building
and networking effects and is part of
creating the fabric of urban life.”
Questions to ask: to what degree are universities as places to go to? Can they play a different role in overall network of education and learning? How can universities relate to real life of students? What kind of urban citizens are students?
Our next presenter is Roger Keil (@rkeil). He is presenting on students in the city, transportation, and urban life.
Our next presenter is Mengyan Huang, who is sharing their research on international students’ experience with public transit during the pandemic in the Greater Toronto Area and Greater Vancouver Area
Sanjana Hossain returns to the podium again to present their research on the choices of telecommuting of students - particularly when it is not enforced
Suburban students were more likely to switch to driving. Walking and biking declined as a commute mode - but need more analysis to understand why and where.
However, for students who didn’t move and remained students between 2019 and 2022, transit use did not change
Students who completed the 2019 survey were recontacted to provide their 2022 travel behaviour, allowing a point of comparison. Some decline in local transit use, with increase in regional transit and driving.
Our next presenter is Raktim Mitra (@RaktimMitra), presenting their research on post-pandemic travel behaviour changes
Mobility tool ownership (drivers license, transit pass, bicycle) is a factor for which mode to use. Household size is also a factor - larger households more likely to use transit or active modes. Distance to destination also a factor.
Sanjana Hossain is next, presenting their research on the determinants of choosing a commute mode and the frequency of using that mode
For private cars, main factors and advantages is to use when transit accessibility is low, it is faster, and sometimes more cost efficient than transit
On the other hand, many transit users also say that transit is often unreliable, inaccessible, and too expensive.
Cheaper cost is one of the biggest factors for students to use public transit. Another is being able to read, rest, and relax.
Our next presenter is Mohsen Alavi (@AlaviMosen), who is sharing their research on understanding the attitudes of students towards private car use and public transit
Ryan finds that students reported a negative impact that their commutes have on well-being. There is a positive association between commute satisfaction and campus well-being. Finally, commute mode, duration, and travel attitudes statistically associated with commute satisfaction
