The threat from Islamic terrorism isn’t over. But on their way home to Israel, survivors of the hijacking broke into an old Jewish song: “The whole entire world is a very narrow bridge / and the main thing—is to have no fear at all.” WSJ editorial: wsj.com/opinion/flydubai-tel…

Passengers of the FlyDubai flight on the way to Israel sing “And the main thing is—not to be afraid at all”: 180 people who came within a hair’s breadth of a terrible end.

For the first time in over 20 years, someone has tried to hijack a plane bound for Israel. Miraculously, the attacker, an Omani pilot, was overpowered before he could complete his mission. The entire region held its breath as the morning Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv sent an emergency signal, flashed the hijack code and appeared to veer off course over Saudi airspace. The region then exhaled, almost with a chuckle, when early reports blamed a scuffle between the two pilots. That laughter quickly died as security assessments and passenger testimony revealed that the co-pilot had repeatedly stabbed the captain. The terrorist then seized the controls and pointed the plane toward the ground, dropping almost 20,000 feet in just over a minute, until several crew members and passengers forced their way through the cockpit door and subdued him. Many were injured in the process. The plane made an emergency landing in Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where the passengers are now waiting for Israel to bring them home. The assailant’s specific motive and affiliation are still unconfirmed, but Israel is treating the incident as terrorism. Unlike many of the hijackings in Israel's long history, today's had a happy ending. It also came just weeks after the 25th anniversary of the deadliest hijacking in history. Many questions remain. How was this man cleared to fly the plane? What precisely drove him? And what does this mean for the future of air travel in Israel’s busiest flight corridor? El Al suspended its scheduled flights to the United Arab Emirates in March 2026 due to security threats and has not resumed them since. It is possible that the assailant intended to drive a wedge into this crucial alliance. Just yesterday, Benjamin Netanyahu warned in a speech at the IDF’s main air base that “our enemies will try to attack us.” “Don’t mess with us,” he warned. “Our long arm will reach you anywhere, and at any time.” But it was not the avenging fist of the Israeli Air Force nor a heroic rescue by special forces that foiled today’s threat. It was the courage of everyday Israelis. There was a very real and tragic possibility that I would be writing an entirely different article today. With the captain barely hanging on to life, a broken steering system and a damaged wing, it was only by the bravery of a handful of passengers and crew that almost 180 lives were saved. Today, on the fifth day of Sukkot, we will recite the words of Hallel with extra fervor: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

We got an early taste of New York Magazine's new direction in the days after 10/7. In September 2023, we got a call: my husband @BenZevG would be featured in @NYMag's list of the most powerful New Yorkers. A (lovely) reporter interviewed multiple people about our synagogue. Mark Peterson came to take pictures of services right after Yom Kippur. The piece was filed. Then came 10/7. That Friday, we got another call. He'd been cut. "Editors got spooked," we were told. This was a little story about a shul drawing young Jews back to faith. It had nothing to do with the Middle East. Overnight, New York Jews like us -- Orthodox, deeply connected to our ancestral homeland -- had become untouchable. It was chilling. I sensed, in that moment, that this would be the beginning of Jews being pushed out of cultural institutions, and eventually, erased. So if you ever wondered why that list had 49 names instead of 50, now you know. They cut the rabbi.

No, no one who wants America to own the next century will back off support for innovation leader Israel. I am sure @yhazony doesn't think GOP wants to lose the future.
Marco Rubio would be “backing off of Israel” if he were running for president, @yhazony told me in The @Jerusalem_Post studio. Hazony helped establish the national conservatism movement. JD Vance has publicly credited him with influencing his politics. He chairs the foundation behind NatCon, whose conferences bring together conservative politicians and writers shaping the nationalist right. Hazony argues that Rubio and Vance face the same electoral pressures. Losing even a small share of voters sympathetic to Tucker Carlson, he believes, could cost Republicans the White House. I asked why Vance keeps insisting that Israel won’t dictate American foreign policy. “It is what a responsible Republican trying to become president needs to say right now,” Hazony replied. He also called Carlson’s show “the leading clearinghouse for antisemitism on the political right in America.” Hazony has refused Carlson a speaking slot at NatCon in Jerusalem. Hazony wants Jewish and Israeli audiences to take Vance’s description of Israel as a leading American ally seriously. Vance placed Israel alongside Britain and France, he pointed out. “He’s naming America’s closest allies and putting Israel there.” Vance and Rubio should explain what those electoral pressures would mean for military cooperation with Israel and US support during a crisis. Full interview in the first reply.

Great essay by @rabbidkraus - Most Jews who have sung "Eitz Chaim" over the past half-century probably never knew Portnoy. They did not know when he wrote the melody or how young he was when he composed it. They simply knew the song. jewishjournal.com/culture/ar…

My family joins me in thanking everyone for their prayers and support. Neriyah’s life still hangs in the balance but we’ve seen some promising signs that we grasp in hope. We believe in the power of prayer, that G-d hears prayer and can heal when healing appears impossible. Along with my sense of gratitude to all for caring, I would like to request that the prayers for Neriyah include good wishes for all those who have sustained serious injuries at the hands of terrorists. They and their colleagues are the heroes who ensure that we will persevere and win the battle against those who spread murder and mayhem. It is a struggle for the future of civilization, no less.

Pray for @yechielleiter & entire family. They lost a son in Gaza killed by Hamas. Now a Palestinian terrorist attempts to murder IDF soldiers at a checkpoint. Standing w/ @yechielleiter
I am grateful to the IDF, to the medical team at Shaare Zedek who are now fighting to save the life of Neria Dov ben Chana, and for the prayers of the people of Israel. I believe in the power of prayer, and I believe that when the people of Israel unite, miracles happen. Neria needs a miracle. Neria continued to serve in the reserves after losing his older brother, Moshe Yedidya Leiter, of blessed memory. Since October 7th, he has served hundreds of days in the reserves on multiple fronts. Palestinian terrorism seeks to uproot the people of Israel from their land. They choose death - we choose life.

The critically wounded victim of the terrorist attack is Neriah Leiter, the son of Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. Another of the ambassador’s sons, Moshe Leiter, was killed in Gaza at the beginning of the war. The ambassador has been briefed and is monitoring the situation remotely.

In a remarkable re-reading, Rabbi Eleazar ben Judah of Worms, known as the Rokeach, saw in the sukkah not a frail structure but a successful battle tent - a projection into the past amidst his own personal misfortune. My latest @JewishJournal jewishjournal.com/judaism/39…

Wow. Incredible piece.
Omer Shev Tov in the WSJ: "Hamas knew where I was and left me to die. Israel didn’t know my location, but it knew where my captor’s mother was and called to make sure she wasn’t killed accidentally. Israel's chess players took forfeit losses for observing Yom Kippur. Their federation says it had secured a written agreement back in January to move the matches. Colombia and Singapore agreed to changes. The Netherlands and Bulgaria kept the holiday slots and received 4–0 wins. The agreement should have been honored. My first book review - on assignment from @TheFP - gave me newfound appreciation for the genre. It was impossible to fit even a quarter of the enlightening takeaways from "In The War Room" - the riveting new book by @ElliotKaufman6 and @jeremybob1 - into this piece.
Three years after October 7, Hamas remains active, Israel is an international pariah, and tens of thousands of civilians have died, writes Yardena Schwartz. She raises the question: Who actually won this war? thefp.com/p/israel-won-the-b…
