Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk says, “This book should be required reading in schools of urban design, architecture, and landscape architecture, and an understanding of it should be part of the licensing requirements for civil, traffic, and transportation engineers.”
From the first edition of Street Design (but not the second):
And in #Cooperstown, New York, an old alley:

The downside of the chamfered corners as used in the Eixample in Barcelona was that they created very wide streets, with a lot of wide-open asphalt to cross – which is why they lend themselves so well to the new low-traffic superblocks.

This is a high-traffic street. It has no painted lanes and compared to the same street in an American city it is practically naked. #TheMondermanRule
We're working with London's boroughs to grow our Cycleway Network and enable more people to safely cycle around the capital.
I'm looking forward to working with @lbhf who, last night, approved the new Olympia to Hammersmith section of Cycleway 9.

For safer and more livable streets, it is better to remove traffic signs and markings than to add them.

QUOTE: "This is the most important book on street design in the English language. Every highways department, planning authority, urban designer and architectural practice, should have a well-thumbed copy. If they don’t, you should worry. Elected councillors working with highways or planning officials should check that they do. Clients commissioning streets, squares or neighbourhoods should do likewise. If they don’t have it, hire another consultant. Street Design is that good." - Nicholas Boys Smith, @createstreets

I'm finally getting around to writing the article on Disney's masterdeveloped courtyard block neighborhood in Serris, France, and it is FASCINATING
Here's one of the sketches for the neighborhood from 2000. An unpracticed eye might say this looks like new town development in the US, but I guarantee you NOTHING like this has been developed in the US EVER
We do versions of this where each block is a single development and all the units are accessed off of double-loaded corridors. Totally different

You haven't researched this, @JMNC176795. Many highways have been successfully removed, and Google and AI can find a lot of studies and articles. If you look at those, you will find that solutions vary according to context. You might start with the West Side Highway, which just fell down, of course. Then look at all the work @OffRampNYC has done.

Highways concentrate traffic, producing traffic jams and points of conflict where the traffic enters the city – and those points are ALL places with high traffic fatality rates, where suburban and sub-urban drivers in the middle of journeys filled with road rage run people down.
Urban grids disperse traffic, and when the streets are properly designed, they civilize traffic, slowing it down making it safe for everyone, and supporting city life.

For decades too many junctions in London haven't had pedestrian signals - TfL is upgrading these to make it safer for people crossing these busy roads.
Good to see the A217 London Rd / Cricket Green junction completed.

Mari @BikeSomi had a great idea: Interconnect the emerging trails / greenways into a system, the #MiamiLoop. I summarized it for local leaders last week at the Loop Summit, a debut organized by Miami commissioner Ralph @RosadoForMiami Rosado. Short vid: youtu.be/LssPn159XmI?is=qfIG…

Providence moved I-195 off its downtown waterfront and got back roughly 40 acres of land for homes, jobs, and a new park, now linked by a walking bridge across the Providence River. Their downtown was reconnected to the water; Brooklyn neighborhoods deserve the same.
