Never let someone go to the trunk to look for their license or any part of the vehicle without you first making sure there’s no gun there. Stop letting people reach around when they “can’t find” their ID.

Every agency needs a group of cops that goes out and gets after it. Admins should be encouraging and fully supporting these folks even when sh*t hits the fan which it will inevitably do because this is police work.

I find the idea of “Basic Training” to be an excuse for not training properly. Maybe it’s time everyone begins to rethink what we’re actually doing and how realistic this stuff actually is? My bad for making sense.

If you want to recruit cops to your agency answer the questions that actually matter to people. How’s Morale? Supportive Administration you can trust ? Pro-activity encouraged? Pursuit Policy? Fair selection for promotion and specialized units? Do you have specialized units?

Defense attorneys love cops who don’t know case law.

How it usually happens: One guy gets in trouble and they get his phone. Then they inadvertently see your messages. Your concerning behavior is now a new open case with lawfully obtained evidence. And then you’re fired because you texted stupid shit.

It’s okay to go to a work related event as long as you leave at the halfway point right as you start to notice the alcohol passing the ingestion threshold and start taking effect on everyone.

Do not get involved in a dating relationship with anybody you work with. Especially when you’re their supervisor. Bad bad bad. Nothing the agency enjoys more than dealing with a toxic relationship and how to deal with it. Control yourself and download a dating app or something.

Don’t go out drinking with your coworkers. You can have friendships outside of work. Just don’t add alcohol to them. New guys wonder why and senior guys know exactly why.

Stop texting your coworkers anything other than lunch plans. If you have to discuss something call them. If they text you something stupid don’t respond. Call them and ask them how stupid they are.
