In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.
She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.
The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.
She handed out the checks herself.
In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.
When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.
You've probably heard that part.
Here's the part you haven't:
The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.
Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.
She built her county an entire hospital.
She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.
In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.
Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.
In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.
And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.
She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.
She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸

Albert Einstein is among the many notable figures whose travels brought them to Panama during the Canal’s early history. His connection to the waterway offers an interesting look at a time when the Canal was already recognized around the world as an extraordinary achievement in engineering and international transportation.

The annual Pentecost tradition (today!) at Rome's Pantheon is a moment of extraordinary beauty.
It occurs every year on the seventh Sunday after Easter. At noon, after the Holy Mass, thousands of rose petals are dropped through the oculus of the mighty dome.
As the petals fall, a choir sings "Veni Sancte Spiritus," known as the Golden Sequence, a masterpiece of sacred Latin poetry.
This is to celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Virgin Mary and the Apostles.
The rose petal ritual likely dates back to 607 AD when the pagan temple became a Christian church.

#OTD 75 years ago (April 22, 1950): During a 15-minute intermission of the afternoon matinee show of “Ice Cycles of 1950,” William Neal Reynolds Coliseum was formally dedicated by a host of North Carolina dignitaries, which included Gov. Kerr Scott, UNC-System President-elect Gordon Gray, R.J. Reynolds chairman of the board James Gray, NC State College Chancellor Col. John W. Harrelson and UNC comptroller William D. Carmichael. Also among the 7,500 spectators in attendance were Mary Katherine Reynolds Babcock, her husband and their 7-year-old daughter Betsy.
Babcock, then considered the wealthiest woman in the world, gave the initial donation of $100,000 to begin construction of the mammoth arena in 1941, with the request it be named in honor of her uncle, William Neal Reynolds, brother of her father and co-founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company of Winston-Salem. “Mr. Will” and his wife Kate raised Mary, her sister Nancy and her two brothers (NC State aerospace engineering graduate R.J. “Dick” Reynolds Jr. and the late Z. Smith Reynolds) after their parents died when they were still adolescents. Babcock and her husband gave an additional $52,000 to purchase ice-making equipment for the coliseum and, in the 1951, the first of 605 acres in Forsyth County to move Wake Forest College from its original home in the town of Wake Forest to Winston-Salem.
One person who did not participate in the festive activities was William Neal Reynolds, who had medical procedure the week of the dedication and was unable to travel from Winston-Salem. Reynolds, a graduate of Trinity College in Durham, was identified by Carmichael as “owner of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, member of the Duke University Board of Trustees, Democrat and Presbyterian.”
He was celebrated at length, as was the Reynolds Tobacco Co.
“The name of Reynolds is inseparably interwoven with the agriculture and industrial life of North Carolina,” Carmichael said. “The trustees, in honoring William Neal Reynolds, by naming one of the most important buildings in state history, also honor State College.”
Things got a little cringy when Carmichael, namesake of @NCState's Carmichael Gymnasium and UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carmichael Auditorium, started reeling off Reynolds’ cigarette brands in his speech.
“I would be a poor Chesterfieldian, Gov. Scott, if I did not say that it was a Lucky Strike for North Carolina when Reynolds hit on Camels,” Carmichael said.
The featured performance, however, was the first of two shows that Saturday and the fifth consecutive day of the “Ice Cycles” international tour, was Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” with skater Margaret Field as Snow White and her husband Jimmy Lawrence as Prince Charming. Ice Cycles later became the Ice Capades, which appeared regularly for week-long stints at Reynolds Coliseum for decades.
