Virginia said no to neighborhood slot machines. Thank you @GovernorVA for vetoing legislation that would have expanded the most predatory form of gambling across the Commonwealth.

Neighborhood slot machines are already banned in Virginia. These cash-heavy gambling operations pose obvious risks to public safety and do not bring community benefits. It’s time for localities to enforce the law already on the books.

In @RTDNews, @lisavedkhanna makes the case: Virginia already banned "skill" games. Now enforce it. An estimated 90,000 machines are still in gas stations and
corner stores. Let’s get them unplugged and out. #StopShadySlots
Per the NYT, in Virginia the share of problem gamblers identifying skill games as their primary form of gambling nearly tripled in one year. Our communities deserve better.
"Some businesses have refused to remove them and Pace-O-Matic has responded with a new machine it claims is compliant with Virginia law, again daring vice squads to confiscate it"

Hiding behind the "skill" moniker leads to real harm. As one woman profiled by the @nytimes put it: “There’s the same lights. There’s the same noises. There’s the same dopamine rush.” These machines don’t belong in our neighborhoods.

No matter the state, neighborhood slot machines aren't showing up in wealthy suburbs. They're clustering in neighborhoods with the least to lose. That's not a coincidence. It's a business model. We applaud those like @SpanbergerForVA and @PhillyMayor who continue to call out these predatory machines.
I’m pleased the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided that skill games are slot machines. They should not be easily accessible in neighborhoods that already face high rates of poverty, crime and violence.
You only find them concentrated in our most vulnerable communities. You won’t find these kinds of stores – stop and gos, smoke shops – and these slot machines – in wealthy neighborhoods. They aren’t there.
It’s predatory, and it’s not right.
As Mayor, I don’t have the luxury of turning a blind eye to ills like street homelessness, the opioid crisis, or our housing and affordability crisis.
This kind of predatory activity only exacerbates seemingly intractable problems that we are challenged with solving. And no one has come running to save our City with the revenue it needs to address these systemic issues.
I’m going to be watching this issue very carefully. In no way, shape or form do I think these slot machines should be in our neighborhoods already struggling from socio-economic and public safety issues. If they are going to go anywhere, they should be in private clubs and casinos.
They should not be accessible to our children or in our most vulnerable communities. I am lifting my voice in opposition, and I am not going away.
"Virginia's communities are not jackpots."
These slot-style machines are already illegal in Virginia. A pastor with 40 years in ministry made the case this year for enforcing the ban rather than legalizing the problem.
ICYMI🚨 Fredericksburg Reverend says so-called skill games are "the latest scheme to extract dollars from those who can least afford to lose them," calls for "moral clarity" and enforcement of the Commonwealth's ban on the machines. @InsideNoVA
Kids shouldn't grow up thinking slot machines are just part of the corner store, like the candy aisle and the slushie machine. Normalizing neighborhood slot machines in front of kids is a cost we'll pay for decades. Virginia made the right choice in keeping these machines illegal.

North Carolina is done ‘playing games’ when it comes to illegal neighborhood slot machines. Across the country, law enforcement is getting serious about enforcing the existing bans on these shady, predatory, and ILLEGAL machines. #StopShadySlots
A multi-agency effort between the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office's Organized Crime Unit and the DEA resulted in a man being arrested on multiple gambling charges.

Legalizing “skill” games doesn’t solve the problem; it makes it worse.
In Illinois, the numbers tell the story: Burglaries of legal neighborhood slots are surging, with already more recorded in 2026 than all of 2025.
Legal or not, these machines are magnets for crime. #StopShadySlots
Not even six months into this year, there have already been more than 500 burglaries — signaling what could be a very ugly year crime-wise at local gaming parlors. More than $1.5 million was taken in the incidents in 2026 so far. chicago.suntimes.com/the-wat…
BREAKING: A West Philly man is fighting for his life after the latest “skill” game-related shooting. These
machines ARE NOT harmless entertainment – they can cost lives. This is why enforcing Virginia’s ban on

🚨PA Supreme Court affirms what we already knew in Virginia. "Skill" games are neighborhood slot machines and should be treated as such. These are predatory devices and the ban must be enforced.
“Skill” games are just neighborhood slot machines, plain and simple – and a new op-ed shows exactly how this shady industry operates: political money, pressure campaigns, and phony small-business slogans. These dangerous machines have no place in Virginia.

The Trace reported on a survey of 4,700 Philadelphia businesses and found: “More than 50% of businesses in low-income neighborhoods had skill games, while only 3% had them in the high-income neighborhood of Chestnut Hill.”
The “skill” game industry’s predatory targeting cannot be tolerated in Virginia! Enforcing the existing ban is the only option.

Time and time again, governors have echoed public opinion and said NO to "skill" games.
A poll by Global Strategy Group found that 67 percent of voters do not want "skill" games polluting the Commonwealth + a poll by Hart Research could only find 36 percent of Virginians in support. Turns out, opposition to convenience store slots is broad and bipartisan! #NoShadySlots
Thank you @GovernorVA for blocking the latest push to legalize “skill” games in Virginia 🙌. These predatory, dangerous, and ILLEGAL machines have no place in the Commonwealth.#StopShadySlots
