Enjoying several expert talks by key metabolism researchers, including the talented @SezSaysScience as part of the @UQMedicine supported Mini-symposium on #metabolism.
Enjoying quiet time in the lab as @melkg97 @StephanieHowe98 and @AmberGreen67157 take on the challenge of not speaking for 48hrs to support those who have lost their voices to #ALS #MND. Click below to support a worthy cause👇@MNDFoundation @UQMedicine

Last chance - 2 days to go - get your abstracts in!
Closes 21st September
Abstract submission for the 2023 Australia and New Zealand MND Research Symposium is open. Sage Hotel in Wollongong on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th November 2023. - mndaustralia.org.au/research…
Very grateful for an opportunity to learn from an amazing lineup of delegates across the Asia-Pacific regions at the 2023 @pactals meeting. Looking forward to building better research connections
In, this #OpenAccess manuscript by the talented EMCR @StephanieHowe98 et al., we explored associations between #Ghrelinand #LEAP2 (endocrine factors and regulators of #appetite) in ALS; findings were somewhat unexpected. A thread to help explain (1 of 5) doi.org/10.1111/ene.16052
5/5 - #ghrelin acts on the #hypothalamus 🧠to regulate #hunger 🍔 #metabolism 🔥; can we strengthen this to benefit #PALS. Thank you to @MND_RIA @UQMedicine, and @FightMND and @NIHfor supporting @NgoShyuan @ZigmanLab. A BIG thank you to the #PALS for their time and contributions
4/5 – #PALS with higher #ghrelin were more likely to have lower #BMI & #FatMass, suggesting they were at greater risk of #malnutrition. They also had greater risk of earlier death; are benefits of ghrelin lost, and can we target this to improve outcomes? More research 🔬needed.
3/5 – When comparing findings with functional decline, lower #ghrelin and greater #LEAP2ghrelin was associated with lower physical capacity; #ghrelin does more than regulate appetite. It can be neuroprotective 🧠 and support muscle 💪 function. Are these benefits lost in #ALS?
2/5 - Seeking to improve understanding of why some #PALS lose appetite, we show that postprandial hunger hormone #ghrelin is lower in ALS, and a big increase in #LEAP2ghrelin, suggesting #LEAP2 might block #ghrelin actions. @ZigmanLab was instrumental in making sense of this.

Our Scientific Seminar Series is back with a new time on Tues, Feb 28 at 12pm AEDT! Our first talk is @Fred_Steyn & @HoldomCory from @Steyn_Lab with 'Use and validation of digital technologies, including actigraphy, for care and research in MND.' For more fal.cn/3vUfr
Collaborative project between @UQ_News and @UMCUtrecht showing that wear location will impact #actigraphy outcomes in #ALS #MND
Led by #PhD student @HoldomCory with insights from @rpavaneijk. Thank you for support from @HondaFoundation
@WesleyResearch @MNDFoundation @FightMND
I'm excited to share our paper following from @rpavaneijk's work on the use of passive actigraphy for monitoring #ALS #MND function outside the clinic. There is clearly a lot of opportunity to expand the potential of this technology. @Steyn_Lab @Ngo_Lab:

Does hypothalamus size matter in #ALS? Patients with low hypothalamic volume with low BMI tend to lose fat mass and have increased risk for earlier death. Thank you to the #PALS and their friends and family who contributed to this work. doi.org/10.1111/ene.15589🧠@EANeurology (1/4)
