#LoveAndLiteracy is now available to preorder from Amazon: amzn.to/3wuHlAS
I’m loving this podcast—and @natwexler’s thoughtful piece! What di means for reading comprehension is a question I’ve thought about so much there’s a whole nerdy appendix on it in the new book! 🤓 #deepcuts
How we teach AND what we teach.
@natwexler Wexler offers a thoughtful caution on Sold a Story Season 2: Engelmann’s focus on instruction and Hirsch’s focus on knowledge are both essential.
We can’t leave knowledge out of the conversation.

I’m excited to share this post on my upcoming book—on the Uncommon Sense blog! If you’re a fan of whole novel instruction, the science of reading, or responsive instruction that isn’t 1,000 passages of “inference” practice, I hope you’ll check it (the post or the book ☺️) out!
Exciting news: we’re one month from publication day for Team Up With the Text, my new book with @paul_bambrick!
We know isolating reading standards isn’t a particularly fruitful or research-supported way to teach comprehension. But what should we do instead? 1/3
That’s the Q we’ve spent more than a decade grappling with—& at the heart of the book. As @MrZachG put it: “This is the precise, analytical approach to instructional design that teachers have been missing, & it's the next chapter the science of reading has been waiting for.” 2/3
If you’re curious, you can learn more wherever you buy books, or at stevechiger.com/team-up/.
Between now and publication, I’ll also be sharing more about some of the ideas behind the book on LinkedIn. I hope you’ll come along for the ride. 3/3

If we know teaching “inference” in isolation is bankrupt pedagogy, what might research-minded educators do instead? Join me and @learningandtheb this 10.31 for a webinar that digs in. I know it’s Halloween, but I promise no tricks and all treats. 🎃🤓

Oh, I love this! Signed up. And for season 2, maybe practitioners who are research fans to get on the ground, too? 🤓 Seriously, between this and Sold a Story 2 we are feasting!
I'm hosting a new series, Lit Talk! I'll sit down with researchers I admire to dig into literacy questions educators wrestle with every day. First up, Oct 14: Dr. Matthew Kraft on instructional time, where it goes and how to make the most of it. Join us: share.inquired.org/4AJjiz9
Very excited for the deep dive into DI!
(Pitch for season 3—how US literacy instruction mutated into a parade of isolated skills and how to find our way back. 🤓)
Sold a Story Season 2 is coming, two weeks from today. youtube.com/watch?v=4YDq-AB_…

What a terrific way to think about how to support students. Same bar, different supports. Hear, hear!
Come for the Sandlot meme, stay for the argument about why “differentiation” so often misses the mark.
Same bar. Better support. More chances to get there.

So excited to be speaking next week at The Bell Ringer's symposium on Crossing the Decoding Threshold! We'll talk research-backed ways to improve reading in secondary, and you'll leave with tools and moves you can deploy immediately. 7:30p. *Free*! Deets: substack.com/home/post/p-213…
B&N sale ends today! If you know isolating standards is unhelpful & want an alternative, this is for you! If you want classroom-tested ways to respond to comprehension gaps w/the science of reading, this is for you! If you want a reason to champion class novels, this is for you!
Hypothetically, what if you had a new book coming out in Nov. & hadn’t really announced it yet, but B&N launched a *25% off* pre-order sale 9/9-11? Maybe you’d provide this link & ask everyone to act surprised down the line? 😅 Fair, right? barnesandnoble.com/w/team-up…

Fantastic post from Carl on the skillification of English class. I’ve been worried about this, and with @paul_bambrick have been working on alternatives for schools who want to respond to student work but know that knowledge and rich, full texts are a non-negotiable ground floor.
Starting a weekly series on that today, culminating in a new book that will go deep! First post: linkedin.com/posts/stephen-c…
