At Rescue Lung, she consistently used “people without a smoking history” instead of “non-smokers” throughout her presentation on her research in screening Asian women without a smoking history. This may seem small, but it’s a significant shift toward honoring the @IASLC Language Guide that reminds us how labels can diminish our humanity. Important Note: Dr. Shum's study is FANSS (Female Asian NON-SMOKERS Study). The name, which predates the guidelines and cannot be changed, is not the focus. What truly matters is her intentional choice of words to discuss the study. She understands that WORDS MATTER, and her dedication to real change has not gone unnoticed.
