US electricity prices are skyrocketing. The average price of US residential electricity has risen +11% since January 2025, to 19.6 cents per kilowatt-hour in August 2026, near an all-time high. Average prices during the first 8 months of 2026 were +40% higher than in the same period of 2019. The largest increase in residential electricity prices over this period was in Maine, at +90%, followed by California and New York, at nearly +70%. This comes as the AI boom is intensifying electricity demand, with data centers requiring enormous amounts of electricity to power thousands of chips and cooling systems. A 1-gigawatt data center can consume as much electricity as 800,000 homes. As a result, wholesale electricity prices in areas near significant data center activity surged by as much as +267% between 2020 and 2025. The AI revolution is driving a surge in electricity demand, and households are increasingly feeling the cost.

BREAKING: Ukraine to restart major strikes on Russia's oil refineries, with Zelensky declaring "The block on attacking refineries is out. We're done," per the FT. Zelensky says the reason for the restart is Trump lying to him by deliberately blocking Starlink but presenting it to Kyiv as a "technical glitch," as well as telling Ukraine that the missed ballistic missile warnings earlier this week was due to "bad weather," which killed 6. "It was not a technical problem, it was the will," from Trump, he says. He also slammed Trump's eagerness to strike a diesel deal with Russia and Trump's apparent admiration for Putin, saying Trump has an instinctive affinity for autocrats and the super-wealthy. "He speaks about it openly and loudly that he loves such people and he respects such people," Zelensky says.

"Blaming Ukraine didn't work for Orban in Hungary, and it won't work for Trump in the US."
Q: "It's not just Trump, we also heard from Elon Musk saying Zelenskyy has gone too far. Why are they blaming you for the continuation of this war?" Zelenskyy: "Because these people can't find a key to how to stop Putin. Because it's more difficult to stop Putin than to pressure others..." The key to stopping Putin has always been the same: Russia’s ability to wage war must be destroyed, both economically and militarily. Right now, the US is doing the exact opposite. Zelenskyy: "It’s simpler to talk about prices and connect them to Ukraine, when everyone in the world understands that prices are rising because of the war in the Middle East and the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz. If we want to speak with people fairly, if we want to be clear, if we want to speak with our nations openly, people have to hear the reality. Don’t play games with people." Because Ukraine is in a vulnerable position, it is an easy scapegoat for everything. We are under attack and depend on our partners for support. We are forced to perform true miracles of patience and diplomacy. But blaming Ukraine didn’t work for Orbán in Hungary, and it won’t work for Trump in the US.

Hänellä on ehkä koira. Where does money invested into the AI buildout actually go? For every $100 flowing into the supply chain: - $50 to chips - $20 to power - $15 to networking - $15 to cooling, buildings, and land More charts in State of Markets II: a16z.news/p/state-of-markets…
Introducing our State of Markets pt 2, along with a companion podcast where we unpack the data and discuss what comes next. Tech is the everything cycle. Supply: putting the buildout in context, just passed railroads as % of GDP. The wisdom of Elon is real: the factory (or the datacenter!) is the product. Demand: diffusion is so, so early. Median AI vendor spending in the top 1% of companies is 8x that of the top 10%. Only about 30% of S&P 500 companies report a quantified AI impact, which means there’s a substantial opportunity in connecting models to a company's data and workflows. Diffusion into companies is one of the main themes of the next 5 years. We’re entering the agent work period. Only a few million users today, but applicable to billions of internet users with massive surplus created. META/GOOG monetize US users at $200+ per year today. Agent opportunity is much higher. Today we announced the Claude-led discovery of a molecular machine that we suspect could represent a new gene editing mechanism. Its precise function, biotechnological utility (if any), or level of significance is not yet clear, but at minimum it is work I would have been proud to do as a PhD student. The work was done mostly, though not entirely, by Claude: our life sciences team suggested a broad area of research, Claude read through the literature and a bunch of genome data and discovered something interesting, then Claude proposed experiments to verify the discovery and our team carried them out. It’s easy to dismiss this as a one-off or curiosity, but we’ve repeatedly seen a pattern where AI performance in new intellectual domains goes from weak to superhuman in a matter of a few years. In 2023 models struggled to do math at the level of an average high-school student. In 2024 they started to do well on math competitions for the best high-schoolers in the country, in 2025 they started to solve minor open problems, in early 2026 more significant open problems, and in late 2026 they are beginning to solve the top few open problems in all of mathematics. We believe AI for biology is on a similar exponential trend. The main difference between biology and mathematics, of course, is that math can be done purely theoretically, while biology requires experimentation. Some have used this to draw the conclusion that AI’s utility in biology will be limited. We think this is wrong. As we’ve demonstrated today, humans can collaborate with AI to perform the experiments, validate key results in a few weeks and, if necessary, work with the AI to iterate on what they find. Eventually it may even be possible for Claude itself to safely perform the experiments by autonomously controlling lab equipment, with appropriate safeguards in place, but we aren’t doing that today (our lab is also a BSL1/BSL2 facility that doesn't handle materials dangerous to humans). More broadly, biomedical advancement has many stages — from fundamental biology discoveries, to translational research, to drug discovery, clinical trials, and finally the actual delivery of medicines and health care to patients. We are also interested in these later stages, but even simply accelerating the first stage of fundamental biological discoveries has the potential to speed up and broaden the entire pipeline. Improving our understanding of biology and sharpening biologists’ tools can drive forward all of the later stages, for example by identifying new drug targets, finding new therapeutic modalities, allowing for more precise measurement, and speeding up the experimental loop which itself further accelerates our understanding of biology. This will not in itself speed up clinical trial times, but if it succeeds it could greatly increase the number of promising candidates that go into the pipeline — an increase in throughput even though latency remains. In Machines of Loving Grace, I wrote about AI’s potential to “cure most diseases in 5-10 years” — a goal that sounds impossible, but one I believe is just barely possible if AI is applied to every stage of the pipeline. The first step is showing that AI can first help with, and then drive, biological discoveries. Claude’s discovery is the latest in a line of related prior work that goes back decades, beginning with systems like CRISPR, and continuing with discoveries like the bridge recombinase and VIPR in the past few years. Recently, there has been heightened interest in systems based on reverse transcriptase (RT) enzymes, the enzyme underlying the system Claude identified. And most recently, a Stanford team working independently described a novel RT system with an associated non-coding array that is in some ways similar to the one Claude found, though they are distinct systems that evolved independently from each other. I believe that we’re at the very beginning of finding such systems and developing them into powerful tools for biotechnology. I’m proud of the resources Anthropic has invested in accelerating the public benefits of AI through the life sciences, and we’re aiming both to grow our life sciences team and to work with other scientists to extend this approach to a broad range of problems. If you have a proposal for a research collaboration or are interested in joining our life sciences team, please reach out.
Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use. Read more: anthropic.com/news/claude-di…

The 2020s are arguably one of the worst decades for Europe in modern history. It began with the pandemic lockdowns which contracted GDP by -6.1% across the EU, the biggest drawdown since the 1930s. This was followed by the Ukraine War which began the ongoing energy crisis. Then, the AI Revolution began in 2022, in which Europe has fallen significantly behind the US and China. Between 2020 and 2025, the US deployed roughly ~$500 billion of venture capital into AI compared to just ~$50 billion in Europe. Europe was then hit by the highest tariffs in US history, impacting $600+ billion of annual European exports to the US. Now, the Iran War has pushed Europe into its worst energy crisis ever, with central banks being forced to raise interest rates. The 2020s will be remembered as one of Europe's most disruptive decades in history.

Fingridille on tullut datakeskusten liityntäkyselyitä jopa 100 GW.

No, hyviä uutisia!

Niitä on 300 miljardin euron arvosta. Viisasta. Investointi antaa sähköntuottajille kysyntää jonka varaan rakentaa lisää sähköntuotantoa. Loviisan ydinvoimaloiden käyttöikää voidaan pidentää ja mahdollisuus rakentaa lisää ydinvoimaa paranee. Lopputulos? Suomi saa paremman verkon, lisää sähköntuotantoa, lisää veroeuroja, kymmeniä tuhansia työpaikkoja, lisää osaamista, nopeammat verkkoyhteydet maailmalle. Nämä lisäävät tilaa seuraaville miljardi-investoinneille. Vaikkapa Kokkolan 5 miljardin euron alumiinitehtaalle tai tekoälytehtaille, joita tarvitaan paljon. Edessä saattaa olla Suomen kulta-aika. Siis 4% vuotuista kasvua, työtä ja hyvinvointia. Vähän kuin 1998-2003. Go Suomi Go!

AI is much bigger than most people realize. We currently have multiple $1+ trillion companies switching spots as the "best" AI model on a monthly basis. OpenAI just went from "falling behind" in the AI race to reaching Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in a matter of weeks. Meanwhile, frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI continue to leapfrog one another across major benchmarks and capability categories. When you have multi-trillion dollar companies losing and regaining the lead on a monthly basis, that's not normal. That's indicative of a historic technological revolution, with hundreds of billions of dollars in annual CapEx spending and trillions of dollars in AI infrastructure investment planned over the coming years. We are in the midst of a generational shift in technology. Take advantage of it.
