Interesting watching the "trauma-informed" retreat from their previous dogmatic positions. The move from "The Body Keeps The Score" to "The Body Keeps the Score sort of" While I commend the retreat from lies, the inconsistency requires further reformation. Take for example the attached article. This article wants to say two things at once: 1. VDK was directionally helpful with his framework. 2. But VDK's framework was materially false at key points. In point 1: Claes says VDK helped people see that trauma affects the body. (Sadly, we know that is not what VDK was claiming to do, nor what people believe now about trauma). In point 2: She rightly points out the Frontiers article that the body does not store trauma. But then moves to include "body work" as a help to counseling trauma. These blaring errors in addition to the continued category mistakes show that much work is still to be done in undoing VDK's errors.

We are at the phase of discourse in the biblical counseling conversation where everyone I don't like is a Fundy.

No psychological system can truly solve man’s restless problem: “Even though man should seek laboriously, he will not find it out; and though the wise man should say, “I know,” he cannot find it out.” (Ecclesiastes 8:17b, LSB) “The more self-conscious men become with respect to the real meaning of their own position, the more clearly do they realize that their systems are escape-mechanisms by which sinners seek to hide the truth from themselves.” -Van Till, Systematic Theology pg 182

"What we are witnessing in the field of biblical counseling today is not a true Reformation but, as Van Til perhaps would have seen it, a counter-reformation. It is presented as if it were the consistent outworking of Reformed theology, but in reality it is of a different order. This modern reformation risks drifting toward epistemological instincts more reminiscent of Trent or Kant than of a consistently Calvinian epistemology. It is presented as a reformation, a move “forward,” yet it returns toward an epistemology of autonomous human reason." — @DrKeithAEvans

To be clear, Van Til’s doctrine of common grace allows that unbelievers may discover much that is true and useful. But this is not the same as granting that unbelieving disciplines may supply the church with governing categories or methods for ministerial care—frameworks and methods which are never philosophically neutral. — @DrKeithAEvans

Also getting these vibes:
And yet just 2 years ago Poulton presented a paper at the @acbc colloquium, doesn't seem very good faith of Poulton to make these uninformed claims, seems like an anti-fundamentalist fundamentalist to me.

"Until these New Fundamentalists demonstrate the humility to rectify the quarrelsome environment they have cultivated, and good-faith dialogue is restored, the biblical counseling movement is destined to split into a “big tent,” cooperative-evangelical form of biblical counseling and fundamentalist biblical counseling." ~ @jared_poulton thelondonlyceum.com/what-is-…

“I glory in that which at the present day is so much spoken against - sectarianism. I find it applied to all sorts of Christians; no matter what views he may hold, if a man be but in earnest, he is a sectarian at once. Success to sectarianism; let it live and flourish. When that is done with, farewell to the power of godliness. When we cease, each of us, to maintain our own views of truth, and to maintain those views firmly and strenuously, then truth shall fly out of the land, and error alone shall reign.” CH Spurgeon:8, 181

Yes, let us reason together.  @BobKellemen seems to imply that @seanperron’s story is false in his first point. But he doesn’t know that this story was shared publicly at a live Q&A during the ACBC conference, as a few hundred people can confirm.  With that said, let’s address each of his remarks in turn: 1. Lots of “assumptions” here. But it’s not uncommon for people spend thousands of dollars on ineffective counseling. And this is what the pastor said in a public forum; Sean is simply relaying what was reported to him seeing no reason to call the pastor or the woman a liar. 2. Exponential growth in no way applies growth in every area of the world, nor does it imply that CIBC has no influence. The pastor who shared this story is in another country where CIBC unfortunately has considerable influence. 3. What planet is Bob on? The entire conflict is about CIBC bringing things outside of Scripture into counseling. 4. No one is against extra biblical information, as has been said again and again and again and… again. But Bob intentionally disregards this extra biblical information to prop up his divisive agenda.  5. Yes, we can all marshall testimonials to defend our positions. But, some testimonials accord with the truth and glorify God more than others. We should all rejoice in the power of God to transform this woman’s life. 6. Bob skewers ACBC every chance he gets, with virtually every other breath he takes. The breathes in between are spent doing his weird subtle-brag thing he does in point 5.  7. Bob doesn’t make the rules. The Bible itself is full of testimonials that point to the power of God’s word to transform lives.

If you can do counseling without the Holy Spirit, it is not biblical counseling! If I use Freud’s methods, Freud gets the glory. If I use Francine Shapiro’s methods, Shapiro gets the glory. If I use Bowlby’s methods, Bowlby gets the glory. If I use Skinner’s methods, Skinner gets the glory. But if I use God’s prescribed means, God gets the glory! “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36, LSB)
