When I've posted this headline previously, some took exception to referring to El Cid as a "warlord." I see nothing wrong with it. He definitely was more—a legend of Christendom and one of the greatest men ever to take up a sword—but he also was a warlord.
Why does "Warlord" always have to carry a negative connotation and only apply to non-western leaders?
Someone - I think Georges Duby or Max Weber - said that Feudalism and Manorialism were types of rule by warlords in the West.
Who could be called a Warlord today? Not the Kony 2012 guys who do petty crimes with small arms in the 3rd world.
Politically-connected weapons manufacturers seem like the most realistic option.
