So I'm trying to get funding to put back a shopping center that took 6ft of water when a floodwall broke in a recent storm. We're scrambling for every shekel we can find because the insurance money wasn't even close to sufficient. In the process, we're running all the traps on TIF financing, disaster grants, SBA and anything else we can find. Turns out, the employment tax collected for the center divides out to $16m in wages paid through the center. $16m for a 20 tenant shopping center in one of the poorest counties in the country. A job is the best welfare program. I imagine a huge portion of that $16m will end up being paid out in social services if we punt on the project. But landlords are the bad guys. We just play golf and walk our rent checks to the bank...
