The Moral Universe is Not Relative Western civilisation gave us two extraordinary guides to the human condition: Dante and Shakespeare. Dante understood something profound: the universe has a moral structure. Human beings are not free to pursue every desire without consequence. There are moral and psychological laws woven into reality, and the direction of our choices matters. Dante showed us the path toward the good. His Divine Comedy is a journey from the darkness of disordered desire toward truth, love, wisdom and ultimately the good. The journey suggests that the moral order is not simply a set of rules imposed upon us. It is something woven into the structure of existence itself. Shakespeare showed us what happens when we violate that order. In Macbeth, ambition becomes obsession. Obsession becomes fear. Fear becomes violence. Violence becomes tyranny. One poisoned choice creates another until the corruption of the individual spreads outward and the kingdom itself begins to bleed. Dante shows us the path upward. Shakespeare shows us the poison of abandoning it. Together, they reveal a remarkable understanding of the moral universe. Truth builds. Love binds. Justice restores. Humility opens the way to wisdom. But hatred corrodes. Pride blinds. Deception destroys trust. The desire to dominate breeds fear. And violence creates consequences that eventually return to those who unleash it. These are not merely political opinions. They are patterns of human existence that our greatest thinkers spent centuries trying to understand. The moral universe has consequences. We can ignore those laws. We can deny them. We can convince ourselves that power makes us exempt from them. But we cannot escape the consequences forever. That is the great lesson contained within our tradition. Dante tells us that there is a path toward the good. Shakespeare shows us, with terrifying psychological precision, what happens when we choose the path that poisons the soul. And perhaps this is what our civilisation most urgently needs to remember: Civilisations do not destroy themselves in a single moment. They begin by losing their understanding of what is good. Once truth becomes negotiable, cruelty becomes justifiable, power becomes an end in itself, and human beings become instruments rather than ends, the descent has already begun. But the opposite is also true. Every act of courage, truth, mercy, justice and love is a movement in the other direction. There is a way back. Dante gave us the vision of ascent. Shakespeare gave us the warning of descent. The moral universe gives us the consequences. And the choice of which direction we take remains ours.
