OK, since you asked... There are nice-to-have features, of course, but I think you guys have underestimated how bad the Flo experience is in a crowded gym with questionable internet. It literally doesn't work. As coaches, we spend the whole day struggling to figure out when and where our wrestlers are up, because the site won't load. Thank goodness for the text messages, but when I've got five guys on deck and can't pull up the dashboard to see how soon they're wrestling, I'm flying blind. I pulled network logs on both sites. Trackwrestling is old-school JSP in frames, and it loads about half a megabyte of its own JavaScript. Flo's new site loads about 14 MB of (uncompressed) JavaScript for an event page. That's roughly 28 times more. It might not seem like much on a laptop with fiber, but on a phone in a packed rural gym, it's the reason the page never finishes loading. Both sites also have way too many ads. I counted about 500 requests to 120-150 different domains on a single page load, which is five times or more what most sites shoot for. Every one of those is fighting over the same weak connection in that gym. On the page I was looking at (our state tournament), Flo also has a caching problem that should be an easy fix. Your JavaScript files have versioned file names, but they're served with a 10-second cache lifetime. So every time I open the page, my phone re-checks all 136 files with the server instead of just using what it already has. Marking those files as long-lived and immutable at the CDN would take care of that. The HTML page itself also isn't being compressed. I don't have access to your code, and all of this came from about ten minutes in the browser's network tab. After a five-year transition, I'd really encourage the team to test on a throttled phone connection with a cold cache, because that's what we're dealing with every weekend. Honestly, we just want it to work. I think we can all forgive UI/UX issues and features (although I'm sure you could get a nice big list if you asked) if it just works 99% of the time.

Recently saw some underground water lines located with blue flags. Got a giggle from this one next to the big red fire hydrant. 😂 I’m pretty sure we already knew there was a water line there guys. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

The product is better with the 3 pt takedown and the rules of folkstyle encouraged stalling long before the switch. Stalling will continue to be an issue as long as we continue rewarding wrestlers who pretend they arent trying to get out of bounds on the edge. Push out point now.

A day late but special reflection on 1 year of training for Veteran’s Worlds. Some things I’ve found: Your resume means little at this level. What matters is what type of shape you are in, how committed you are and how much you care. All three of those things are within your control. Having been an elite wrestler in the past helps but doesn’t guarantee success. You cannot be competitive off the couch. This is not an old man softball league. These guys are serious and very good. It is very hard to find a proper training setup, especially if you’re not a coach. Finding training partners is hard. Finding training partners you age, weight, skill level who have similar schedules and are willing and able to train is a very difficult task. I spent at least 6 months trying, begging, cold calling people. It is easy to give up right there. Not many coaches are willing to take a Veteran’s level wrestler in. People think Veteran’s wrestling is weird and a joke. Not just strangers but your friends and family. Basically everyone was like um .. ok .. whatever makes you happy. I can count on two fingers the people who were like yes, good idea, you should do this. That meant a lot to me and continues to mean a lot to me. Many of these issues fade over time. Talk is cheap. It is easy to say you want to do something. When you show you’re serious and committed through your actions, opportunities present themselves. All of the wrestlers at this level that I have met are elite humans. Some are elite wrestlers, some are not. But all are elite - and very successful - people. There are at least a million retired wrestlers walking around in America. There are 15-20 in Colorado Springs right now at the World Team training camp. You walk a rare path you encounter rare people. It is critical to have patience. I’m not sure if there is any other sport where you develop rust like wrestling. The physical demands are great. It took me a very long time to be in good enough shape to even practice enough to get better at wrestling. I had to lose a lot of weight. I still need to get much stronger. Everything hurts for the first two months. Neck, back. If you’re not on a mat regularly, these wrestling muscles atrophy. I can wrestle 5 days a week now. I wrestled for four hours today. Wrestling for 90 minutes this time last year would have put me in a wheelchair. Leave the ego at the door. I won three freestyle state titles in New Jersey and was not a scrub. There are a million things I do not know. There are positions where I don’t know what I am doing or where to go. I am constantly asking for help from anyone willing to give it. I’ll take advice from high school kids. Many of my friends were incredible wrestlers or coaches and I am constantly badgering them. This was not a continuation of anything. It was a restart. I looked like a moron when I first got back on a mat. I look like less of a moron right now. There is nothing worse than being a proud loser. I won approximately zero matches this first year. The first actual match I wrestled in more than a decade I got absolutely torched. Pretty much embarrassed. If you think you are going to be a World Champion off the couch because of what you’ve done in the past, you are going to get your ribs broken. It is easier to get better quickly as an adult. I know what is right and wrong and I can feel it. I usually know that it was wrong, what about it was wrong and what the solution is. If I dont, I am surrounded by people who can help me. The smartest person is the room is always an idiot. It is fun. It is not fun out of the gate. You have to white knuckle through some shit before it can become fun. Winning is fun but passionately perusing aggressive goals is the root of what makes it all fun. If you do not find it fun, it will be a miserable experience. You won’t get better and you will be bitter about getting your ass kicked.

I think if you win a US Open or D1 NCAA title it should be permitted to have red/white/blue striping on your singlet or an American flag for the rest of your career any time you wrestle that style. They do this in cycling for former national and world champs and it’s great.

Why is it that pictures of wrestlers in their wrestling stance during a match nearly always look cool but pictures taken in a wrestling stance standing alone always look super dorky?

Sometimes, all it takes is an invitation. When Cliff Cushard, former head women’s wrestling coach at Adrian College, asked if his kindergarten-aged daughter could join a team with no girls, the answer was simple: “Why not?” At the next practice, 18 girls stepped onto the mat. They had been watching their brothers from the stands...they just didn’t know they were welcome. In only two days, the team grew from zero girls to the largest girls’ wrestling team in Michigan. That’s the power of inclusive leadership. Join us at next year’s NWCA Collegiate CEO Leadership Academy and help create opportunities that change lives. 🤼‍♀️ #WrestlingCoachesChangeLives #CollegiateLeadershipAcademy #GirlsWrestling

There is a real missed opportunity with the UWW world championships. Every successful sport (FIFA, NFL, etc) has a defined season and schedule that leads to an apex. UWW is scattered and not marketed.

Saying America would do better in soccer “if we sent our best athletes” relies on a very naive assumption. Namely that top athletes in our favorite sports have transferable ability to win at any sport. Straight up not true. If it were we would see more two sport pro athletes.

I once heard some idiot claiming that Dennis Rodman could win the Tour de France if he tried. Now Rodman is a great athlete (in 🏀 ) but it’s hard to explain just how spectacularly badly he would get smoked in a even an pro bicycle race.

Now if we did have a greater number of athletes move over to the ⚽️ pipeline, no doubt we would end up with more athletes with more athletic ability. But saying the best 🏈 players could become the best ⚽️ players is broadly false for most of them.

Bought this jerky stick today. I think there is an Iowa wrestling joke somewhere there in the title 😂 (Pretty tasty if you wondered)

I don’t hate penalty kicks in soccer to break ties (they have drama). But I’ve long wondered about an alternative. After full time, keep playing but every few minutes both teams must remove a player. This keeps happening until it’s down to 1 on 1 if needed.
