POV: You accept what you think is a free trip abroad, only to end up sentenced to life in a Chinese prison. In 2014, Chicago, Illinois, native Dawn Michelle Hunt, who was working as a receptionist, traveled to Hong Kong after being told she had won a contest. She later traveled to mainland China, where she was given luggage containing designer purses before being told she had won a trip to Australia. At the airport, Chinese authorities discovered drugs concealed inside the purses. Dawn was arrested and spent about three years awaiting trial. She was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, which was later changed to life imprisonment. Dawn has maintained that she was deceived and did not knowingly transport the drugs. Her family has continued campaigning for her release. She has now spent more than 12 years imprisoned in China.
