Police are not social workers. They don't prevent crime. But recently, by-law officers have been ticketing homeless Torontonians $260 for "loitering in a park without a purpose."
This city needs to have a frank conversation about the role and responsibilities of police.

Just an FYI a not guilty verdict does not erase the disgusting and dehumanizing things that those 5 pieces of garbage did that night.

Our downtown is for people who live in Guelph, period. Our low income healthcare, religious institutions, education and social services plus their patrons have every right to be there too. Downtown is for community, not just capitalism. The core is not just for the wealthy.

Reminder that all fragrances and essential oils are not accessible and that a good chunk of the population has adverse medical reactions to them. Choose scent free products for day to day and working so that you aren’t a barrier to those around you.

Every Mayor who requested the use of the Notwithstanding Clause to violate homeless people's Charter rights did it for a pittance. None of this will provide the resources needed across Ontario — it wouldn't even provide the needed resources for a mid-sized municipality.
NEW: The Ford government unveils it’s encampment plan:
• $75 M for access to alternative accommodation including:
• $50 M to create long term affordable units
$20 M for additional shelter spaces
The premier says the new law would also prohibits the use of illicit drugs in public spaces with fines of up to $10,000 and 6 months in jail for repeat offenders.

$50 million for unaffordable “affordable” housing (100 units). $25.5 million for housing homeless Ontarians. Guelph’s per capita share, $286,000. Funds 8 shelter beds. Is that all Mayor Guthrie needed to solve Guelph’s homelessness crisis? @CamGuthrie @CouncillorCaton @cityofguelph @GuelphToday @GWLegalClinic
This much needed funding ($75.5 million) to help transition those in encampments to safer shelter or housing is key and I applaud the premier for this focus. Guelph is ready to partner with our social services manager and with the government to ensure we have positive outcomes for those struggling with addictions, mental health and housing needs in our community.
A top complaint I receive as mayor from citizens and businesses alike is about the open illegal drug use in our parks, downtown cores and other public spaces. This legislation looks to tackle these challenges head-on and are most welcome! More info here: news.ontario.ca/en/release/1…

I clocked this today today. I hadn't heard of any encampments on playgrounds or splash pads, and if there were, the purpose of the Public Space Use Bylaw was to give staff the tools to deal with that. So why does the mayor need ONgov to use notwithstanding clause?
There has not once been an encampment near a splash pad or playground in #Guelph btw, our mayor is fear-mongering again

This means we have won all three of our Council motions to date in County of Brant, Orillia, and now Guelph. St. Thomas, whose mayor originally requested the use of the Notwithstanding Clause, has rescinded the request, and Smith Falls, Hamilton, Toronto and Goderich are on-side.

Thanks so much to Guelph council for their votes to uphold our charter rights and freedoms.
Great news! @cityofguelph's Council voted to reject the use of the Notwithstanding Clause against homeless people. With Guelph's Mayor being among the original 15 who requested the Clause, Guelph's position has now been democratically flipped. Thank you, @erin for your motion!

Just 1 in 5 @fordnation supporters strongly agree with the use of the Clause.
