An incredible opportunity for ambitious scientists interested in solving research problems that are ill-suited to the traditional academic model. (Note: you may not yet be aware that you fall into this category!)
Applications are now open for the 2027 Cohort of Brains Fellows!
If you have an ambitious technical research idea (in any discipline) that is beyond the scope of an academic lab or VC-funded startup, we want to hear from you!

We just wrapped up the 2026 cohort of the Brains research accelerator!
Our fellows are building programs to do everything from creating electronic noses to running challenges on AI-human teaming for better sensemaking to designing constantly-updating antibiotics.

The Universal Robotic Nose Project (“Project URN”) is dedicated to building the first universal gas sensor so machines can have the sense of smell. Check it out! Please share with anyone you think might be interested in helping us make this a reality!

This is what @Spec__Tech is striving to be!
(There are some prerequisite things on the tech tree we need to take care of first.)
can someone just work full-time on cool utopian technologies like the warp drive, the utility fog or iron man’s self-assembling nanotech???
i like @Ben_Reinhardt takes pretty well here - accelerating engineering & manufacturing processes is (partially) a way there

I'm super excited to go for bold science as part of the @Spec__Tech Brains accelerator! I am pursuing a mechanistic way of scaling up phase transformations with x-rays and simulations. Check out the cohort in their thread!

@apoletayev is unlocking a new type of manufacturing data by tracking the paths of atoms as they assemble into materials during syntheses, especially if they do so rapidly.

Published our response to the recent Tech Labs RFI.
Tech Labs could go one of two ways: it can unlock a whole world of ideas that wouldn’t have seen the light of day, or it can experience mean reversion and capture by incumbent institutions.
Getting it right matters!

Do you know an awesome junior project manager who loves science and technology and knows how to get shit done? Please send them my way - we would like to hire them for our Brains accelerator! lava-somersault-a5a.notion.s…

Just published @Spec__Tech's yearly lessons and updated hypotheses.
Including:
- Work that's a poor fit for both venture and philanthropy,
- It is so much easier to make progress on ambitious research when you are already doing things.
- Deadlines are incredibly powerful.

For a thousand different reasons, in a hundred different fields, this is perhaps the biggest key to success.

We realized that (to our knowledge) nobody had unpacked where the money for “misfit research” — work that is a poor fit for academia, startups, or large companies — was coming from.
So I wrote a short but hopefully comprehensive overview.

(Re)published a piece on the Spectech Blog about how efficiency warps the types of ideas that get support, which ones get killed too early, and which ideas people choose to pursue in the first place.

🧬🪦“SRA is the graveyard for sequence data.” Overheard at @Spec__Tech's Nerd Party yesterday.🥳
Sequencing is cheaper than ever, so we generate massive datasets, extract a sliver of publishable insight, and the rest gets buried. It's about time we build a scalable infrastructure that allows for discoverability and reusability of all deposited sequences (+ their metadata).

Last day to apply to the AI Brains Accelerator!
12-week part-time program to train future DARPA/IARPA program managers.
This is a special cohort focused on AI. I'm not affiliated, but excited that it's happening.
Get AI security research done at DARPA!

I've noticed that:
1. A lot of people building technology are bad at answering the question "does this technology scale?"
2. Many people seem confused about what scaling a technology actually means.
So I wrote something that will (hopefully) be a useful introduction.

I draw a lot of inspiration from the patch-covered flight suits -- we made patches for the first cohort of the Brains accelerator and plan to make them for future
@Spec__Tech milestones.
