Fumigation timing, ventilation, withholding periods and storage hygiene can all make a difference to how well grain performs in storage.
In the latest GRDC podcast, Ben White and Chris Warrick from the GRDC Grain Storage Extension Team share practical advice on managing stored grain insects, reducing resistance risks and using diatomaceous earth effectively.

🌧️ A high-pressure blackleg season in 2026 has reinforced the need to match fungicide use to disease risk.
For growers heading into 2027, key lessons include monitoring crown canker, changing varieties where disease levels are moderate to high, avoiding canola-on-canola and rotating fungicide modes of action.
Advice from the University of Melbourne and Marcroft Grains Pathology is helping refine management through the GRDC Disease Management Extension Network.

🌾 A good rust sample can help get useful information back to growers sooner.
Samples with enough rust can move directly onto differential lines, with results potentially available in around three weeks. Samples with very little rust may take closer to six weeks.
Earlier results can support more informed rust management decisions.

OP varieties pictured below, Streatham Vic smashed with leaf blackleg. Blackleg pressures very high across NSW & Vic this season due to continual use of similar varieties, esp CL hybrids & some RR hybrids within regions & warmer winter conditions combined with higher rainfall. HOWEVER ADFH - Hyola Solstice CL & Hyola Regiment XC are holding CLEAN for growers. ROTATE, ROTATE, ROTATE. @PacificSeeds @danrollsroyce @hurgl1 @schilgee @AgingAgro

A visual difference spotted in my nitrogen yield curve trial at Streatham!! 320kg/N/ha versus 0kg/N/ha
Here’s hoping to some significant results out of the trial (which would be a first 3 years of running it here!)

Paraquat is here to stay - a few restrictions to abide by but it will hopefully be used safely and effectively + responsibly into the future and avoid situations like this (no double knock).

Interesting observation on the @Crop_Watch @theGRDC study tour. Variety trials in the UK include an untreated (no fungicide or PGR) vs. a treated. I know which variety I wouldn’t be choosing!
