Resident doctors’ extra-contractual rates are under threat.
Across the South East, a regional framework is being used to set ceilings on rates for extra-contractual work. In Kent and Medway, a system-wide rate card is being introduced, with some rates lower than those previously available locally.
Your regional South Thames team is already challenging this. We wrote to Kent and Medway trust leaders, calling on them to reconsider the cuts and retain higher existing rates. We also warned that lower rates risk leaving more shifts unfilled, increasing pressure on colleagues and affecting patient care.

An early start and a busy day today as BMA staff and reps join induction events across the south east.
Meeting new doctors at Redhill this morning.
It’s not too late to take advantage of our membership offer. Pay nothing for three months.
Another induction day. Maidstone today.
Today's new FY1s start on a basic salary around £3k more than last year & over £10K more than FY1s starting in 2021.
That didn't happen by accident. It happened because doctors stood together.
Collective action works.
@SouthThamesRRDC
Great to be at induction events across the region today.
We’re looking forward to meeting new FY1 doctors, welcoming you to the NHS, and making sure you know the BMA is here for advice, representation and your collective voice from day one. – at South East, England
Big news for trade unions 👏
Electronic voting for most UK statutory ballots was approved by the House of Lords yesterday.
Expected to come into force by the end of Aug.
This is a significant step forward & a win for democratic participation.

Maternity and social care will be top priorities for the new Health and Social Care Secretary @YvetteCooperMP.
We followed her as she met patients and staff at the Royal Berkshire Hospital's maternity department, and then residents and staff at a sheltered housing scheme.
Fair rates need collective action.
SAS doctors and consultants across Kent & Medway: please read this update from your BMA SE team and support efforts to protect fair rates for doctors.

Patient safety must come before bank rate cuts.
Cutting rates for extra-contractual work risks unfilled shifts, greater pressure on doctors and poorer patient care.
Read our letter to Kent leaders and stand strong. #FairRates #PatientSafety
Solidarity with nursing colleagues in Kent & Medway. The planned rate reductions affecting nurses mirror concerns being raised by doctors & others across the NHS.
Healthcare professionals are not worth less than they were last yr. #FairPay @RCNEKentBranch

Having been at BMA House that day, I will never forget the events in Tavistock Sq, where 13 people were killed by a bus bomb outside our HQ in 2005.
We remember those who lost their lives & hope an atrocity like this never happens again.

The ballot for industrial action by SAS doctors in England is closed. A strong majority (90%) who took part voted in favour of strike action, but due to strict minimum ballot turnout rules, the ballot unfortunately did not meet the threshold. Find out more bma.org.uk/saspay

Doctors across Kent & Medway: your time and expertise have not lost value overnight.
Imposed “cartel” rates for your extra‑contractual work risk undermining fair pay & safe staffing.
