It's cool how Americans think they descend from the cream of European society rather than the poor, the desperate and a hodgepodge of ethnic minorities and religious lunatics
every time I think of space colonization, I think about evaporative cooling you take a place (e.g. Europe) and you open up a frontier where a man can make his fortune (e.g. America), and over a long enough timeframe, people will sort into agentic and non-agentic regions

Rome (city) didn’t reach its Roman Empire peak population until the 1950s

I don’t think Americans grasp how much of their social services are paid for by New York City.
I don’t think Democrats grasp how many Americans hate the idea of New York City.

It took an hour being in a major city with my mother limping on her prosthetic leg for me to become an ADA compliance fascist
did you know that per ADA requirements, you can’t legally paint a crosswalk until you upgrade all 4 curb corners to be wheelchair compliant

1/ The US government has ordered the Swedish city of Stockholm to end its diversity, inclusivity and equality (DEI) programmes within 10 days. The city authorities say the demand is "bizarre" and they won't be complying. ⬇️

Honestly, the spread of Christianity. The fact that the most dominant religion of the world came from a little Levantine group on the periphery of the Roman empire. And now Juan from Peru knows all about the Israelite version of a Mesopotamian flood myth
What is, by far, the most surreal event to have ever happened in history?

“Will the next pope be right wing?” Wrong question. Catholicism is nine times older than the left-right paradigm. There’s no way to plot conclave politics on less than twenty different axes, several of which operate on non-physical planes & three of which are about being Italian

The crux of the right is that acceptability should be determined by things like race, class, etc instead of personality or ethics, so they get annoyed when they are judged by the latter and not the former

I think it’s really interesting that liberals do not want to socially associate with conservatives but conservatives desperately want social acceptance to be separate from political ideology.
All of my hobbies lead to liberal friends. I’m okay with not having the same opinions, why can’t they? Or like maybe we just collect the mushrooms & not talk about it.

can’t stop thinking about Edward Berger saying they left Ralph Fiennes alone in Rome for like 15 minutes and he immediately met someone who gave him real Cardinal vestments, put them on, and texted the costuming department a mirror selfie

remember when that gopro video of the powered paraglider crashing went viral on this site and all anyone could talk about for 48 hours was the shrieks of pain from a man who lay crushed in the dust after breaking every bone in his body

108 of the 135 Cardinals who are going to be eligible to vote in the next Papal Conclave were consecrated by Francis.
They’re gonna choose the most fascist pope imaginable

Imagine landing such a sick burn on a cop, a court of law rules that it is beyond question that you were firing on all cylinders xitter.cf/adamsteinbaugh/status/…
Eighth Circuit denies qualified immunity to police officers who argued they had arguable probable cause to believe a driver was stoned. But the driver's clever insults of the officer suggested he was not intoxicated.
