turns out the “sometimes” is specifically when there’s no intersection between the two frames. no intersection means no clipping shape! problem is there’s another major case when there’s no clipping shape: normal shapes that aren’t in a frame at all

no clipping shape can either mean “show everything” (undefined in our code) or “show nothing” (an empty array - a polygon with no points). we were using the wrong one. bug fixed!
