Indigenous Peoples safeguard an estimated 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity. (Source: @UNFCCC ). Indigenous Peoples globally hold ancestral knowledge relevant to their part of the world that is deeply important for health and environmental causes. Here are just a few ways in which they enrich the Earth and keep it on track. Preventing fires by setting relatively small, contained fires, Indigenous communities like the Yurok traditionally would create breaks in the sprawling forests and grasslands that wildfires couldn’t cross, since the fuel — the vegetation — had already burned. Restoration of sustainable loko iʻa or fishpond system done by the Hawaiian community, which has the potential to produce thousands of pounds of sustainable protein annually, while mitigating coral bleaching, beach erosion, fish population overkills, and other imbalances in the marine ecosystem. They dry them out in the sun, toss them in ash and then cover them so that they last longer. Supporting Indigenous Peoples’ rights is the best way to protect our Earth’s health.
