I’ve been thinking about trigger warnings in books lately - and I honestly don’t know which side of this argument I fall on Because I get why they exist. If a book contains sexual assault, suicide, miscarriage, domestic violence, abuse or something else that could be incredibly difficult for someone to read - we need to know beforehand People also read to escape - and the last thing they want is to unexpectedly stumble across the very thing they’re trying to get away from. (This has happened to me btw) But then there’s the other side of it…..are trigger warnings basically spoilers? Say you start a book and the warnings mention pregnancy loss. Then halfway through the story, a character announces she’s pregnant Well - now I’m sitting there thinking - Oh shitttt I know where this is going😭 The same goes for things like kidnapping, suicide, death of a parent or even certain types of violence. Depending on the story, knowing those things are coming could completely change the way you read it So, naturally, I went down a rabbit hole…….and the research was actually quite interesting A 2024 meta analysis looking at several studies on trigger warnings found that they generally didn’t make disturbing material less upsetting once people actually encountered it. Interestingly, they could make people feel more anxious beforehand, because now they were anticipating whatever they’d been warned about Researchers have also looked specifically at people with trauma histories, including people with PTSD, and haven’t found much evidence that trigger warnings reduce the emotional impact of upsetting material But this is where I think the conversation gets a little more complicated, because a trigger warning gives someone the chance to decide whether they want to read the book or not. At the same time, I’m the kind of reader who doesn’t necessarily want to know everything that’s coming. If an author is about to emotionally destroy me - I’d quite like them to have the decency to surprise me first So maybe - put a little note at the beginning saying that the book contains potentially distressing material, and put the detailed trigger warnings at the back of the book.
