For generations, sugar beet has been a pillar of Polish agriculture. But the traditional model โ where farmers grow it and sugar factories simply process it into sugar โ is no longer enough. In Poland, we are rethinking how the sugar beet value chain can create value. Not only for production, but for soil, climate and society.
๐ฅ In this video, the SOILPROFIT business model shows how a circular and collaborative system can connect key actors across the value chain: farmers, sugar factories, certification bodies, research institutions, and biogas plants and distilleries working together to close resource loops and improve sustainability.
Rather than focusing only on yield, the model links practices, incentives and outcomes:
โ farmers adopt regenerative practices and benefit from healthier soils and new income streams;
โ processors gain more sustainable and resilient supply chains;
โ society benefits from improved soil health, water retention, lower emissions and increased biodiversity.
This is what it means to move from a linear value chain to a shared value system for soil health.

Transitioning to more sustainable farming practices requires long-term investment, but identifying reliable funding mechanisms remains a major challenge.
Our Practice Abstract, "Pursuing Carbon Finance Through the Value Chain", presents SOILPROFIT, a business model developed and tested in the Polish Testing Ground to explore financing solutions for regenerative agriculture. The findings show that while CAP eco-schemes currently provide the most stable source of support, revenues from voluntary carbon markets are still insufficient to cover the costs of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
The Practice Abstract provides practical insights into how public and private financing mechanisms can work together to support Soil Health Business Models and accelerate the transition towards healthier soils.

Consumers are not all motivated by the same values when buying directly from farmers. Understanding these differences can help farms build stronger relationships with their customers and develop more resilient business models.
Our Practice Abstract, "Why Do Consumers Buy from Local Farmers?", presents the findings of a survey involving more than 400 consumers. The research identifies different consumer profiles, their motivations and levels of engagement with local food initiatives, providing valuable insights into how farmers can better tailor their communication and marketing strategies.
The Practice Abstract offers practical recommendations for strengthening direct farmer-consumer relationships and supporting more sustainable Soil Health Business Models.

Our practice abstract: "Ecosystem Services for SHBMs", explores how more than 70 soil health initiatives integrate ecosystem services into their business models. While many initiatives already assess soil health through farming practices and soil indicators, there is still significant potential to better recognise and reward the wider benefits that healthy soils provide, from carbon sequestration and water regulation to biodiversity and climate resilience.
These insights can help shape Soil Health Business Models that create value not only for farmers but for society as a whole.
