How deadly is this!
In the Kimberley region of WA, local Halls Creek artist Gaven Stretch has been busy of late turning this graffiti-covered wall into a spectacular mural.
Gaven's creation has only come to life with the help of young people lending a hand.
In good news, SRWA has already identified evidence based principles and a path forwards for WA’s youth justice system that we can use as a blueprint for reform.

It’s now clear that this is a failed system. Cultural, structural & organisational reform is needed at the core of youth justice.Tinkering won’t work. But where are the principles to underpin a reform roadmap? Where is the compass to guide investments? abc.net.au/news/2023-05-10/w…
Alongside our 30 non-government coalition members, we began work on this pathway to reform several years ago, when it came evident that full-scale reform was needed.

Instead of causing further trauma, the WA youth justice system should legally recognises & uphold #Children's #humanRights.
WA needs a #HumanRightsAct that requires public authorities to act consistently with #childrights

An Op Ed from SRWA’s Principal Manager Sophie Stewart in @WAtoday this morning in response to the unrest at #BanksiaHill.
Yet another incredibly alarming self harm incident has occurred inside Unit 18 – where WA children are held at Casuarina maximum-security adult prison.
We’re choosing not to share the details of this incident as the content revealed in The Australian is highly distressing
- Raise the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14 years old, to keep primary school kids in community.
- Introduce a trauma-informed and therapeutic, collaborative model-of-care with community experts and Aboriginal leaders.
“We don’t the government to save us… Don’t just give us another pilot. Give us the keys to the safe and 20 years, then you might just see generational change.” - Barbara Henry NFSWC
“Use the resources and power that you have, to put people in poverty into positions of influence” - Kristen O’Connell
“The reason that we get a lot of public policy, is because we allow it… There is a blurring between stats and people on the street. But there are real human beings at the centre of this.” -@SquigglyRick
Dr Fiona Stanley: At Maranguka/Bourke the local aboriginal community took control of their data, and it enabled them to make such a difference to youth crime in their community #JusticeReinvestment #DataSovereignty
We’re looking for people to join our @SocialRWA team, and help us transform WA’s justice system.

These laws will disproportionately impact Indigenous people & the vulnerable. History & current practice proves this.
“We want the government to invest back into communities, rather than putting more money into apprehending people for really vague criminal activity."
