Two conversations this weekend make me think that there's a vibe shift afoot in Silicon Valley around what one should work on and what is worthwhile. Culturally, it feels like the moment is ripe for new frameworks: • Davos expert morality is stale and discredited. • It's also apparent that the "just be super based" Counter-Enlightenment is not really an answer. (Yes, woke went too far, but simply inverting it doesn't work.) • EA is no longer the automatic default for smart people. • There's increasing skepticism of slot and slop machine dynamics. Overall, "what is worthy and valuable?" feels like it's becoming more central.

“Mission statements” are usually useless. They sound nice but do nothing. But at @hanoverpark we found 2 values that move the needle: 1) Egoless Execution You need an ego to believe you’ll build a generational company. But ego is the enemy of execution. I don’t care who is right or wrong. But the second you start protecting your ego, you’re playing defense and losing momentum. Egoless execution means - “We don’t care about who’s right. We care about winning as fast as possible.” 2) Maniacal Urgency Every “reasonable” timeline is a trap. If you don’t challenge it, your company dies in slow motion. We hate it when someone tries to schedule a meeting for next week instead of the next hour. We make lightning fast reversible decisions. We ship fast. We iterate faster. We only have one speed… now.

My friend Matt just finished hiking the Pacific Crest Trail—2,653 miles from Mexico to Canada. I asked him if he had any profound insights from the six-month journey, and he dropped this truth bomb on me: “On the trail, living is hard—but life is easy. In normal life, living is easy—but life is hard.” The things that make our lives comfortable also make them complex. Busier. More stressful. Like a frog being boiled, we slowly accumulate more things, more obligations, and more relationships that need to be maintained (and paid for). 🐸Before we know it… we’re cooked—trapped in a prison of our own design. We’ve made living easy, but life hard. Here’s the inescapable truth: Whether you’re a billionaire or broke, everything you own owns a piece of you. When you do something extreme—like hiking the PCT—it forces a return to simplicity. You realize that less really is more and creature comforts come at a cost. What I’m talking about here is minimalism—a widely misunderstood concept. Minimalism isn’t about sacrifice and self-denial—it’s about asking of everything in your life: Does this bring me joy? Does it make living easier, but life harder? It’s addition by subtraction: Removing things from your life that don’t bring joy allows you to feast on things that do. If you feel like you’re living on a hamster wheel—maybe the answer isn’t to run faster… Maybe it’s time to step off.

Know that bad patterns in your life and work will always repeat until you learn the lesson. Watch for patterns in the things that happen, and the role you play in them. Once you see it? - Take the hard actions - Go through some mud Then everything improves.

"Storms have 2 purposes: To destroy what isn't solid, and to reveal what is." Often the days will come...hard days...where the storms reveal what you're made of. Grasp that with both hands, and never forget it. They make any future hard work look like child's play.
