Powerful letter in support of the #Humanities and #SocialSciences, from #STEM faculty @MarquetteU. Some of the most effective advocacy for the #LiberalArts can be from STEM faculty who recognize importance of well-rounded university education and interdisciplinary work.
An open letter to the administrative officers and trustees of Marquette University, from its STEM faculty, in support of the humanities and social sciences.

The case for #LiberalArts The idea of #education and the kind of opportunities available have changed dramatically. And even though the future is shaped by #technology, technical education is no longer the only thing that matters. Interdisciplinarity is the order of the day 1/3

I didn't start until late teens. Before and still during that time: Math & science, pencil / paper / mechanical typewriter / HP-35&21 calculators / slide rule. Also, English reading, writing, and editing. In my experience, programming benefits from broad liberal arts education.

Want to know what makes small liberal arts colleges (& Twitter) special? That guy commenting on my #publichealth & #biostats haiku is a nuclear physicist who taught a lit major Physics 101 a quarter-century ago. Thanks, Matt Deady. 😊🙌 cc @BardCollege @BardAlumni @DeadyMary

Teaching STEM without teaching the Humanities is how you get Spider-Man villians. Teaching Theater without teaching the Humanities is how you get Batman villians.

.... Essentially the best argument for a liberal arts education in about 6 tweets
maybe what you're paying for. not the reason for the existence of the institution. and if all you're paying for is job prep, you're doing it wrong. should've gone to barber college.

The spread of the virus is a science problem. The spread of misinformation is a communication problem. Now, more than ever, we need well-rounded liberal arts education that teaches us a variety of methods of inquiry b/c it is foolish to think one discipline can explain it all.

Love it. Reminds us of another fave quote: "In fact, the scientific and artistic personalities overlap more than they differ, and the higher we shimmy into the leafy canopy of talent, the closer the two enterprises seem." Source: David Gelernter's "Machine Beauty"
