On this day—October 12, 2000
The Ramallah lynching.
Two Israeli reservists took a wrong turn. Yossi Avrahami, a 38-year-old toy salesman, and Vadim Nurzhitz, a 33-year-old truck driver, were heading to their unit near Beit El in a civilian Ford Escort. They took a wrong turn and ended up in Palestinian Authority-controlled Ramallah.
PA police stopped them, but instead of turning them around, the officers took them to the police station in el-Bireh. Rumors spread that Israelis were being held there, and more than 1,000 Palestinians descended on the station and began calling for their execution.
They stormed the station, found the two Israelis and began beating, stabbing, and mutilating them. Aziz Salha later described entering the room: “We were in a craze to see blood … I saw an Israeli soldier sprawled on the floor … a knife lodged in his back … I removed the knife and stabbed him … I put my hand over his mouth … to strangle him.”
He then walked to the window, hands and shirt soaked in blood, and waved at the baying crowd below. An Italian television crew captured it, and broadcast the images to the world. One of the bodies was thrown from that same window, and the mob immediately started stomping on and beating him. The other man was shot and set on fire. Once they were unrecognizable as humans, the crowd dragged their bodies through the streets to Al-Manara Square for an impromptu celebration.
British photographer Mark Seager arrived in time to see a body being hauled by the feet, lower half on fire, head “a pulp, like a red jelly.” He reached for his camera, but the mob stormed him with punches. They smashed his equipment and shouted, “no picture.” He later wrote: “It was the most horrible thing that I have ever seen and I have reported from Congo, Kosovo, many bad places … There was such hatred … It was murder of the most barbaric kind. When I think about it, I see that man’s head, all smashed. I know that I’ll have nightmares for the rest of my life.”
A Palestinian police officer, Raed Sheikh, later admitted he took an iron pipe into the room and struck one of the still-living Israelis across the body and head. “The soldier began making a grunting noise.”
This was not “resistance.” It was a deliberate, ecstatic, public slaughter of two Israeli men who had taken a wrong turn, carried out in broad daylight by a Palestinian mob.
The image of Salha’s bloody hands became a defining photograph. Salha was later arrested, convicted of murder, sentenced to life, released in the 2011 Gilad Shalit deal, and finally killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza in 2024.
Decades later, Hollywood celebrities and other professional virtue-signalers put on red hand pins. They call it a “ceasefire” symbol. To anyone who lived through October 2000 or who otherwise knows anything about the history of the conflict, those pins are not ambiguous. They are a stylized recreation of the exact gesture a murderer used to show a cheering crowd the blood of the Jews he had just helped butcher. The useful idiots who wear them either do not know, or they do know and have decided the image is aesthetic. Either way, it is a disgrace.

“My name is Daniel Pearl. My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish.”
Those were the kidnapped American journalist's last words before his throat was slit. On camera.
He would've been his 63 today.
Sending love to his father @yudapearl. You and Ruth raised a hero.

On my recent piece:
I read this generous critique with interest, but I suspect that the central argument of my analysis has not been fully understood. Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations rests on a fundamental premise: that Western civilization remains sufficiently coherent, self-assured, and conscious of its own identity to recognize itself as engaged in a civilizational confrontation with another.
My contention, informed in part by personal experience, is that Western civilization, or perhaps more precisely its European and U.S. expressions, is itself undergoing a profound crisis of identity and confidence. Civilizations in such a condition often lose the capacity to distinguish their own struggles from those of others. They become susceptible to internalizing external antagonisms, gradually transforming foreign conflicts into domestic ones.
Islam, meanwhile, is engaged in an intense struggle within itself, between competing theological, political, and civilizational visions. I believe these internal antagonisms will deepen over the coming decades. The more consequential question, however, is what happens when a Western civilization already beset by its own existential uncertainties becomes entangled in these struggles, absorbing them into its political and intellectual life.
This is where my analysis departs most fundamentally from Huntington. The defining civilizational confrontation of our time may not be one between a confident West and an external Islamic civilization, but one in which a fractured West increasingly becomes the arena in which the internal conflicts of another civilization are fought.

The famous Umayyad Mosque in Damascus was originally a Cathedral.
Many people forget that the Middle East was majority Christian for centuries, and that the most prominent examples of 'islamic architecture' were built on top of existing work.
Syria was overwhelmingly Christian, until it was colonised.
Christian erasure in the Middle East is one of the greatest tragedies in all human history.

Don't cry, Baba. 😔💔
Hours before his execution, Alireza Raeisi was allowed one final phone call from Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan. His father was crying on the line. So Alireza, with hours left to live, tried to comfort the man who raised him.
"What can I do, Baba. They want to take my whole life from me."
Then he asked for one last message:
"Say hello to my uncle. Tell him I'm looking after Ramin over there."
Ramin was his cousin. The son of that same uncle. He was shot dead in the streets of Isfahan during the protests. Now the regime has hanged the other one. At dawn. In secret.
This is what the Islamic Republic calls justice: 18 days of torture. Electric shocks. A forced confession. A trial lasting minutes. An appeal thrown out in less than 48 hours. A gallows built beside a Revolutionary Guard executioner.
They think the rope will end the uprising. The rope is only creating more anger towards society.
When I talk to any of the family members of those who are in prison on the death road, they have a simple demand: tel the world: #StopExecutionsInIran, demand accountability for these unlawful executions. Sanction the judges and executioners. Silence is complicity.

Maybe next year they’ll give the Chemistry prize to a Hamas bomb maker.
The Nobel committee chair says they have "great faith" in Navi Pillay's integrity, but whether the Hamas-Israel war can be called a genocide is for the ICJ to decide, not them.
Then why give the Peace Prize to the person whose commission already decided it, with no authority to do so?
This is the same Navi Pillay who:
🚩 Signed a 2020 statement calling on governments to "Sanction Israel," then was appointed a year later to chair the UN inquiry into Israel without disclosing it
🚩 Defended a fellow commissioner who said social media is "controlled largely by the Jewish lobby," calling him "deliberately misquoted." He later apologized for his antisemitism himself
🚩 Ran the 2009 Durban conference that Ahmadinejad opened with an antisemitic speech, after dismissing Jewish groups' warnings as a "lobbying campaign"
🚩 Criticized the US in 2014 for funding Iron Dome to protect Israeli civilians from rockets, with no mention of Hamas firing them
They handed her the world's most famous honour two days after the October 7 anniversary and then said they're not taking a position on what she's known for.
So what do they mean by "peace"?
