FOOL BRITANNIA by @EdConwaySky While many countries face higher energy costs due to the events in the Middle East and Russia, few have seen quite as big a spike as Britain has. Industrial power costs are comfortably higher than in most developed nations, with domestic costs not far behind. To some extent, this is a function of bad luck and geopolitics. Britain is particularly dependent on natural gas to provide the critical baseload power for its electricity, not to mention much of its domestic heating. But higher energy costs are also the product of policy. Britain pushed faster and further towards net zero (the goal of diminishing carbon emissions to close to nothing in net terms) than most of its peers. The ambition, held by Labour and Conservative governments, was that the UK should be the global leader in decarbonisation – the flag-bearer for net zero. In one respect, the enterprise was a stunning success – Britain is one of the fastest-decarbonising major economies in the world. The main catch in – and the cardinal sin of – the make-things-cheap economy is how it affects energy bills. For all that Boris Johnson and Ed Miliband insisted (and as far as I can tell, sincerely believed) that renewables would mean lower costs, the opposite has happened. Unlike solar power, the cost of which fell precipitously as the Chinese mastered the mass production of arrays, wind power has remained comparatively expensive. And so Britain’s ambitious offshore wind programme happened largely thanks to a complex web of subsidies and price guarantees. Those interventions will lock in higher power costs in this country for years. There is a point – most likely a decade and a half in the future – at which the savings from net zero (less spent on gas and fuels) should outweigh the costs of building all the necessary infrastructure. But for the time being, the policy is expensive – nearly £30bn a year for the next five years, which is the equivalent of an extra 5p on the basic rate of income tax. One of the main reasons net zero is becoming so controversial (and will likely get more controversial) is that the majority of those costs end up on consumer bills. The other problem is that much of this decarbonisation was achieved through deindustrialisation. In the face of higher energy costs and rising environmental taxes, many manufacturers relocated overseas. Indeed, more than half of Britain’s carbon footprint is now accounted for by imported goods. Paradoxically, the more steel mills and chemicals plants shut down, the better the UK’s environmental credentials, since net zero plans ignore the embedded carbon in our imports and focus solely on what is puffed out of domestic flues and chimneys. Restore Britain’s approach to SEND - ensuring the right support, for the right child, in the right environment. We propose a fundamental overhaul of SEND provision. The current system is simply not working for British families. Our basic principle is as follows. Not every child learns in the same way, and certainly not every difference needs a diagnosis. Importantly - not every child can thrive in a traditional classroom environment. How a Restore Britain Government will fix it... Diagnosis. We will ensure children with genuine additional needs receive timely assessments and appropriate support. Don’t leave children to struggle for years in the classroom, it’s not fair on the child, the family, other pupils and staff. It disrupts everyone. Crucially, we will tackle over-diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Restore Britain will commission an independent review of diagnostic pathways, assessment standards and the evidence surrounding overdiagnosis, underdiagnosis and inconsistent practice. We are very, very clear - not every difference is a disorder. Medicalisation is an absolute last resort. Ordinary differences in personality and behaviour should not automatically be treated as medical conditions. Assessments must be thorough, evidence-based and consider a child's wider circumstances. There must be more rigorous diagnostic standards. Ensure assessments are conducted by appropriately qualified professionals using consistent, clinically recognised criteria. Children should receive appropriate assistance based on their individual needs, without being forced to obtain a medical diagnosis simply to access help. That is forcing children through a diagnostic system unnecessarily just so they can get support. It’s wrong. Different children have different ways of learning. Restore Britain will recognise those different learning styles and environments. Some children thrive academically, others through practical, technical, creative or hands-on learning. Schools will offer varied teaching approaches based on what helps pupils make progress. Struggling with maths is not a medical disorder requiring medication. For me this is hugely important - we will massively expand vocational and technical education. We will provide greater access to workshops, engineering, construction, agriculture, mechanics, computing and other practical subjects. All at a younger age. That means giving schools proper funding to invest in these facilities. Children getting frustrated because they struggle in a classroom will be given the opportunity to do what they are good at, and what they enjoy. Restore Britain will develop supported and funded apprenticeship pathways, meaningful work experience and real partnerships with local employers for young people with additional needs. Through my companies, we have developed thousands of apprentices - for young people, this is exactly what they need. Not nonsense degrees, but genuine skills. I've seen the good this can do. We will avoid a ‘one-size-fits-all system’. Ensure children are not unnecessarily confined to unsuitable teaching environments or shoved towards an academic journey which does not suit their skills. That has been a total nightmare for millions of children. Separately, outdoor education, sport and physical activity is vital. Let’s put physical activity back at the heart of education. Expand access to proper daily movement, PE, sport and structured outdoor activities, adapted to individual abilities and needs. We will increase outdoor learning. Encourage practical activities involving nature, gardening, farming and more to connect children with the outdoors. Let’s ensure children have opportunities for exercise and competitive sport. That means improving access to school sports, swimming, athletics and more. A Restore Britain Government will end the EHCP postcode lottery - there must be consistent national standards and timely delivery of legally required support. It should not depend on where you live. It’s simply unfair and unreasonable. We will expand specialist provision so it’s there for those who genuinely need it. Invest in specialist schools and units within mainstream schools, and properly trained support staff. British children who need the support must have access to it - improve SEND training, classroom resources and access to specialist advice, without expecting teachers to manage complex situations without adequate support. That is not fair on the teachers, and the whole classroom struggles. We will put parents in control through simplifying appeals, improving transparency and ensuring families are meaningfully involved in every decision about their children's education. But parents must also take responsibility. This matters. - Ensuring regular school attendance wherever reasonably possible. - Establishing sensible routines around sleep, nutrition, exercise and screen time. - Supporting appropriate standards of behaviour, discipline and respect at home. - Encouraging reading, learning, outdoor activities, sport and practical skills beyond the classroom. - Engaging constructively with the school. Central to everything - we must prepare children for adulthood and work. As discussed, we must create genuine routes into employment - expand supported internships, apprenticeships, vocational qualifications and employer partnerships. Where appropriate, teach practical skills such as cooking, budgeting, travel, communication and managing everyday responsibilities. A Restore Britain Government will help parents prepare their children for working life. But we will stop treating every childhood difference as a disorder, whilst ensuring that British children with genuine disabilities and additional needs receive the specialist help they deserve. More practical education. More apprenticeships. More opportunities to develop real skills. In short - better and more tailored help for those children who genuinely need it. That’s what Restore Britain will deliver.

Today, I announced that there will be NO ASYLUM SYSTEM under a Reform government. It will be suspended. Since 2000, we have granted legions of people asylum. Whilst some fled persecution, many have scammed Britain. They came illegally - by lorry or boat, or by overstaying their visa. And then claimed asylum. Most have received hundreds of thousands of pounds in benefits and state support whilst here - NHS, dental care, food, hotels, HMOs, and welfare. Terrorists, murderers and rapists have broken in. It is a national security emergency. Successive Prime Ministers have betrayed our country by failing to stop this. As Prime Minister, I will end the scam. But what we've set out today goes beyond this. The scale of the betrayal is so great a major response is needed. That’s why Zia and I gave more detail on Operation Restoring Justice today. All of the Tories' and Labour's immigration schemes - Afghanistan, Palestine - will immediately be closed. Every asylum grant given in the prior 5 years will be reviewed. Those who came illegally, or from a safe country, will have their asylum grant revoked and be deported. Countries that refuse to take back their illegal migrants and criminals will face visa bans, sanctions, and tariffs. The few who genuinely cannot go back to their home country will go to safe third countries we strike deals with. We will review everyone granted asylum under the ludicrously suppressed Afghanistan schemes. Those who directly helped our armed forces in combat will keep their asylum grant. That’s only right. But all the others will have to leave. If Afghanistan won't take them back, we will strike deals with safe third countries to do so. All foreign nationals convicted of crime will be deported. All migrant welfare will end. All the loopholes will be closed. And we will make it IMPOSSIBLE to live in Britain illegally. We'll massively hike penalties for landlords renting to, and businesses employing, illegal migrants. And we'll enable and encourage all parts of local government to conduct migration checks - housing, trading standards, environmental health, and licensing. This will mean 10 times more migration enforcement capacity. And, critically, councils will be allowed to KEEP the fines on landlords and employers they levy. Councils will then have a huge incentive to identify illegal migrants and send the data to Deportation Command, who will oversee the exit of these illegal migrants from Britain. Councils will therefore be incentivised to hire more officials, identify more illegal migrants, and levy more fines. This will make it impossible to live in Britain illegally, let alone thrive. Illegal migrants won't be able to rent or work, and certainly not get welfare. Hundreds of thousands will voluntarily leave. And we will enforce the deportation of everyone illegally here who doesn't. All in all, this plan will see well over a million people who are here illegally (or who came here illegally) leave Britain. It will restore justice.

Natural England loves to BLOCK, DELAY & BAN. Here are their top 10 “achievements”. 1️⃣ Became the second organisation to ban kite-flying. After the Taliban. 2️⃣ Spent over ONE THOUSAND DAYS blocking 20,000 news homes, because it could damage the habitat of a snail. 3️⃣ Tried to cull 75% of the Dartmoor ponies because of grazing concerns. 4️⃣ Blocked a theme park in London that would have employed 27,000 people & featured Europe’s largest indoor water park. 5️⃣ Blocked 74 local planning authorities from granting permission for new homes until they could achieve “nutrient neutrality”. 6️⃣ OBJECTED to the construction of its own office in Cornwall. 7️⃣ DELAYED & OBSTRUCTED the construction of Hinkley Point C, which would give Britain cheap, secure & reliable energy. 8️⃣ Shut down a paintballing centre in Exeter that had been operating for over a decade. 9️⃣ Changed the rules about bats to STOP the construction of a dual carriageway near Norwich. 🔟 And who could forget the bat tunnel. Their decisions mean that the taxpayer spends £330,000 to protect ONE BAT. LFG has relentlessly demanded Natural England’s ABOLITION. The Conservatives have now committed to our demand to abolish Natural England. What matters now is action. The Gov must ABOLISH Natural England.
We Conservatives will abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency. Far too much taxpayers’ money is being wasted on dysfunctional quangos that deliver poor results. Natural England stopped 160,000 homes from being built through nutrient neutrality regulations, yet imposed a £700 million ‘fish disco’ at Hinkley Point C that will save just one salmon every 12 years… The Environment Agency has been able to step back from its flood prevention work despite continuing to receive taxpayers’ money to carry it out. Madness! We Conservatives will abolish them because of their track record of red tape, waste and dysfunction.

Today, I'm announcing that I'm standing for the leadership of the SDP. I've said for years that we need people from outside politics to step up, because the political class that put us down here is not going to lift us back up. If I'm perfectly honest, I always meant "people other than me". But William Clouston was the first politician who inspired me to join a party. And he's now inspired me to wade into the fray myself. What he built is unique: a party that puts reality, honesty and the national interest front and centre. My job as leader would be to turn his substance into scale, and reach the millions of Brits who aren't served in the slightest by the current slew of parties. Watch the video to see my ambition for the party - and our country.

My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery. Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster. He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals. I wish Captain Machchhar a speedy and full recovery. He is a true hero.

Restore and Reform need to merge urgently. If anyone from either party is reading this.. the choice is merge or 5 more years of this Labour government with a rejoin-EU mandate. If the problem is Farage - he needs to be removed.. Restore should temper their demands for now.

I constantly have to explain to people from abroad why British politics is the way it is. So here’s a TL;DR summary. > The UK is highly conservative, especially England > The political class was completely captured by left liberal ideology > So the mainstream “right wing” party kept promising conservative policies.. but then gave us unprecedented waves of immigration, asylum and woke institutional takeover > They blamed the high immigration on our membership of the EU, so pressure built and they gave us a rigged referendum in which the government literally posted every household a flyer saying “don’t do it, it will be terrible” > we voted Brexit anyway - because we wanted lower immigration, desperately > They ramped non-EU, 3rd world immigration up by orders of magnitude to the highest levels in history to punish us and to squash Covid inflation by lowering wages while pumping their own property portfolios > Eventually, we’d had enough.. but there was no other serious movement on the right yet.. so we punished them with a historically low vote, removing them from power > This meant the mainstream left wing party won by default. But quickly realised all their ideas had been implemented.. > So now all they do is tinker at the edges and brutally crack down on anyone deemed to be problematic to the race communism revolution / replacement program So here we are.. patiently waiting for 2029 for our next vote.. as if in an orderly queue.. with a party in power that is the antithesis of what the majority of British people actually want. Meanwhile the right is so unbelievably frustrated that it has fractured into 3 parties 1) the original conservatives “we’re sorry we will definitely lower immigration this time” 2) Reform : “anyone can be British as long as it’s legal - we just want to grow the economy and stop the illegals” 3) Restore : “millions must go” I hope you’ve enjoyed my intro to British politics.

This is long overdue. He’s not banning the degrees. If you want to study african-american history or music theory, you still can. You simply need to pay for it or apply for private student loans. The student debt crisis in this country is insane and so many degrees today are absolutely useless. The reason college is so expensive now is because the US government started backing the loans. Obviously the universities were going to start charging $200k, because their customer is now the US government instead of the music theory kid. Taxpayers should only be subsidizing, and therefore incentivizing, degrees our nation actually needs: doctor, engineers, etc.
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

Yes. Expensive doesn’t mean good in sort of the same way expensive housing doesn’t mean we are rich. We are not a rich country in any way that matters. We delude ourselves into thinking we are 6th globally and somehow a superpower, when in reality we have lower GDP per capita (the only measure that really matters to ordinary folk) than Mississippi. We are closer to on par with Lithuania, which was recently communist. We are nominally capitalist and functionally communist. China is the opposite. The state now is a subscription you cannot cancel and cannot use. The social contract is broken. The political elite are morons. The civil service is inept or actively hostile to the national interest. The Bank of England is incompetent. We have the most expensive energy in the developed world which is upstream of the vast inflation across virtually all goods and services one could consider buying. CPI is a lie, a fugazi. Real inflation is around 6-7%. Our capital markets are atrophied to the point where we incubate great companies and take all the risk, then let them leave at the point where they become successful because we can’t competitively raise capital for them and insist they have a one legged gay black transvesite on the board for diversity. The impact of this is all that tax and all those jobs go overseas. The conservative cost of that since Blair is about £20 Tr to the economy. We have successive PM’s who don’t know anything. We now have a PM who doesn’t understand what the bond market is, having borrowed so much our debt to gdp is now nearly 100% and most of that was spaffed up the wall on zero return items - why we are in hock to it, and why we pay a moron premium. Just to add to his collection - he now also thinks you can offer young people 2.5% mortgages to prop up house builders in a market that is nominally repricing downward by 10-20% in the near term in which instance all those homes would be in negative equity virtually instantly. The marginal buyer of our debt is now a mercurial hedge fund manager, our judiciary is ideologically captured by progressive wet liberals at best and hostile Marxists at worst. Justice is applied very unequally and this is transparently the case, and the law always sides with the minority group or labour client demographic at the expense of the law abiding tax paying majority. We let a network of organised Islamic criminals and nonces rape women and children all over the country and the state is complicit in the cover up even in some local cases partakes in the action. This unhinged Blank slatism from the progressive left asserts that the Sudanese and Eritreans arriving here offer identical GDP impact to Norwegians and Americans. Drop an Afghan in Tilfords now viral barley mow pub, offer him warm brown ale, a Labrador puppy and some elocution lessons (a far right fantasy now) and next week he’ll be turning out at mid off for the vets cricket team, opining on the weather and saying “we should go for a beer” to his new found friends - but never following up. He’s just like us. No. Sorry. It’s all fantasy. Insane fantasy. Nothing means anything anymore. And to top it all off AI has completed our voyage into the endless meaninglessness of the Baudrillardian simulacrum, whilst gearing up to make every white collar rules based process driven job there is redundant forever as this Baumol’s cost disease diasterclass heads into an Engel’s pause right when it needs to welfaremaxx the hardest. When a smaller number of taxpayers props up an increasingly growing number of state largesse recipients and can no longer do so - either cos they have left the country already for a more favourable tax jurisdiction- or cos their job doesn’t exist anymore - then you have Betzian civil war à la Lebanon. Or full Balkanisation. Take away the UC opium and watch the patient convulse and foam at the mouth and become violent. Other than that, it’s great. And if we ever meet -- I’ll tell you what I *really* think.
