A very interesting depiction of Spanish galleys engaging English sailing ships near Gibraltar in 1563.
The Spanish 5 galleys were victorious and captured all the 8 English vessels.
This showed the superiority of galleys in the Mediterranean at the time. Despite having 200 cannons to 25 cannons on Spanish ships, the English had little time to use their cannons against fast and highly maneuverable Spanish galleys which were able to quickly approach English ships, board them and overpower them with superior manpower.
The Spanish attacked these English merchant vessels after they disobeyed the order to stop. They captured 240 Englishmen who were condemned to row on galleys. The goods were confiscated.
A lot of people wonder why sailing ships did not take over in 16th century, but battles such as this are a good example why. The cannons simply weren't powerful enough yet to deter galleys from approaching sailing ships and board them. Reliant on wind, the sailing ships could end up being too slow and cumbersome in such situations.
