I am a big fan of Roberto Clemente & when I bought a lot of 1973 SI magazines, it hit me: I have never looked for the SI tribute to Roberto's death. So I was excited to search through the magazines only to get disappointed and frustrated

Devon White stole second, third and home in the same inning on September 9, 1989 for the Angels. One inning, three steals, the entire trip around the bases without needing another hit.
Only a handful of major leaguers have ever pulled that off. It's basically a full offensive sequence created by one runner's speed.

We are saddened by the passing of 15-year Major League veteran and 6-time All-Star Sam McDowell.
Nicknamed “Sudden Sam”, McDowell spent his first 11 seasons with Cleveland from 1961-71. The 6’5” lefty led the league in strikeouts five times, including 1965 when he racked up a career-high 325 Ks to go along with a league-leading 2.18 ERA.
In 1970, McDowell won a career-high 20 games and struck out 304 batters in a career-high 305 innings and finished third in Cy Young Award voting.
A Pittsburgh native, McDowell finished his career with the Pirates in 1975 after stints with the Giants and Yankees. His career totals included 141 wins and 2,453 strikeouts.
During his post-playing career, McDowell worked as a Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Consultant and served on the Board of Directors for the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T).
He was 84 years old.

I don’t want to hear about how good any running back today is until he bulldozes an All-Pro linebacker like he’s a third-grader and then leaves the field without his jersey because the defense had to rip it off his back just to slow him down.
Happy Birthday, Earl Campbell!

ABA memorbilia
This is a semifinal program between the Nets and Spurs in the final ABA season. Julius Erving (Dr. J) vs George Gervin (the Iceman). This is a series (not game) program about 7k-10k were printed.
The Nets would go on to beat the Nuggets to win another 🏆.
When I first got into the graded magazine hobby 6 or 7 years ago, it was literally just a couple dozen guys. There would be 1 or 2 slabs sold per week on eBay. The record price for a sports magazine was $3,000.
Now, sales volume is through the roof, we’ve set 3 all-time record prices this year, and some of the biggest collectible content creators in the world are talking about graded magazines.
It really is amazing to see how far this little hobby has come.

Someone buy this so a card company doesn’t. They will just put on a card in a box that’s too small and cut off parts of it.

Forty-Two years ago tonight, the debut episode of "Miami Vice" aired on NBC and television changed forever.
Ken Griffey Jr has his first multi page article in this issue. He had been mentioned earlier in Sporting News, Baseball America, but this was his first dedicated profile.

Magazine collectors are all familiar with this cover. But most do not know that a future HOF, GOAT makes his first appearance (dedicated article) in this issue.
Do you know who it is?...(1/4)
