Laura has platformed and propagated an impressive amount of misinformation about @THORChain recently, so allow me to set the record straight. To her credit though, Laura will be having TC co-founder @CBarraford on her show on Monday, to finally provide the other side to the story. @tayvano_: “It’s not decentralized” THORChain is very unique in all of crypto. It is no surprise that Taylor does not understand it, because while it superficially very much resembles other chains and protocols, it is not actually like any of them. Perhaps the easiest way to conceptualize and understand TC is to view it as a start up, ran by a DAO, that utilizes a blockchain, to offer permissionless native cross chain swaps. TC is a Startup The thing that TC is most is a cross chain decentralized exchange - a business. TC collects a fee for allowing users to permissionless trade a native, L1 token on one chain for a token on another. Businesses, as is hopefully obvious, cannot be immutable. They must be able to adapt to the market in order to remain competitive. Thus, the TC *protocol* is NOT immutable. It is governed by a DAO. TC is a DAO TC’s ultimate decision makers are its Node Operators, which control its Nodes. They vote onchain and thereby control the functioning of the protocol. Each Node gets one equal vote. They decide what version of the chain code to adopt, and thus also determine consensus. A 2/3rds super majority of nodes can do essentially whatever they want. There are also several protocol processes that only require a simple majority to enact a change. TC utilizes a blockchain TC nodes run and validate the THORChain blockchain, which is a Cosmos tindermint chain. The TC blockchain IS immutable. Already we see how this can be tricky. The TC protocol is not immutable, but the TC blockchain is immutable - easy to confuse or conflate these two things. TC offers permissionless native cross chain swaps In addition to validating the TC blockchain, TC nodes also run full nodes for every chain that TC has integrated: $BTC, $ETH, bitcoin-cash:native, litecoin:native, $DOGE, BSC, $AVAX, $SOL, GAIA, TRON, $ZEC, BASE, and $XRP. TC Nodes are split into groups of 16-20 called Asgard vaults, and each vault forms a giant multisig (TSS) wallet to custody exogenous assets - native tokens of each of those chains in the most trust-minimized way possible. These exogenous assets are paired with TC’s native token $RUNE in k = xy swap pools to allow TC’s users to swap between real, native, L1 tokens. TC’s guiding star is permissionless swaps. It is this criterion that shaped everything else about the protocol. TC believes that permissionless money needs a permissionless market. Permissionless swaps are baked into TC’s very bones. There is nothing in the TC codebase that allows it to censor addresses or transactions. It is blind to the provenance of the funds that flow through it. How decentralized is THORChain? At the time of this writing, there are 103 active nodes (with another 15 eligible and waiting to join the active set). So 69 of them cooperating control the network. However there are Node Operators (human individuals) who run more than one node (multi-node operators, MNOs) and thus have more than one vote in the TC DAO. Due to the sybil problem, it is impossible to definitively determine how many people are required to meet that 69 node threshold. My honest guess is it’s somewhere around 20 currently. Now 20 people might not sound like that many, but again, nothing in TC is as simple as it looks like from the outside. MNOs source bond from Bond Providers, and usually have a relationship with them. A BP’s influence upon a NO is roughly equivalent to the amount of RUNE bonded. Thus, decision making is actually diffused throughout hundreds of BPs, and essentially all of them believe in permissionlessness. NOs who vote against the will of their BPs will lose that bond, which dictates how many nodes they can run. So in practice, it is the totality of RUNE holders that bond their RUNE (of which there are currently 736) that determine the choices of the protocol. Understood this way, we can see that the TC DAO is actually very decentralized, and that it is the BPs, moreso than the NOs, that truly govern the network. Additionally, TC is currently experiencing a NO explosion as numerous community members are being mentored and raised up by the experienced MNOs. MNOs are altruistically giving up their income and nodes so that TC may become more decentralized. > "It's not secure" TC, like many DeFi protocols, has suffered a few exploits and has lost money thereby. However users have always been made whole from these exploits, and no swapper has ever lost funds. > "They've reallocated assets" Taylor’s most correct and most damning allegation. TC created two poorly designed financial products, Savers and Lending (collectively known as ThorFi), that were essentially bad RUNE/BTC options and these blew up in early 2025. TC did end up confiscating user funds, but issued a preferred equity token to them with the aim of eventually making it back to them. There's no sugarcoating this, it is a huge black eye for TC. > “Code not open source” TC is open source, with the very minor exception that its TSS library (the source of its May 2026 hack) is temporarily closed source while its cryptographic security is reviewed and assured. The TSS library is expected to once again be published with the next release, 3.21. > “It’s not permissionless” TC swaps are permissionless. Protocol actions/choices are determined by consensus of the DAO, as has been discussed. > “There’s an admin key” There is not. It was deprecated in Jan 2025, right after it was used to set off the ThorFi collapse. > “Stopped the chain” Correct, the DAO stopped the chain to fix what was broken. > “The actual people behind it is dwindling to nearly zero” The exact opposite actually. As discussed above.
"They all consider themselves these cypherpunks. It's actually insulting, because it's not decentralized. It's not secure. It's not open source. It's not permissionless. It's basically the opposite of everything these guys purport to stand for." Taylor and Kain on why they think THORChain is no more decentralized than Arbitrum Kain: "THORChain has done this. They've done the Arbitrum thing. They've used the key multiple times. So they are in the same category as Arbitrum, in that they have actually done the thing and reached in and stopped the chain for their own reason." Taylor: "But they've also reallocated assets, more than once, internal to their system. So that's not just a phrase. That's seizing assets that don't belong to them, arbitrarily. Changing the balances of accounts in your system." "Right now the code is not even open source. There's some private distro channel with, I don't know, five bros in it who are running all the nodes. I would honestly say it took more people to action the Arbitrum thing than it would to action the THORChain thing. For Arbitrum to do what they did, the amount of coordination was actually hundreds of people." "THORChain always brags that it's hundreds of nodes, but that's not the case. The actual people behind it is dwindling to nearly zero, day by day." Kain: "I genuinely don't understand how someone can get on the timeline and be like, sorry man, it's just a willingness thing."

Yes, but: 1) Anyone who ever feels wronged by Near intents could now sue them. There is clear precedence that they have both the ability and the desire to decide what’s a good transaction and what’s a bad one. This will happen. 2) Any judge, law enforcement official, or prosecutor who wants to go after Near Intents (or its governors and participants) for facilitating illicit use can do so and accuse them of conspiracy or aiding and abetting. This will happen. (They went after Roman for a system he didn’t even control) 3) Any government that imposes sanctions will now expect near intents to enforce them. This will happen. 4) Any hacker (enabled by a frontier model) can now target Near Intents as it has demonstrated centralized controls. You could argue all of this is tolerable or even “worth it”. That’s a reasonable argument. But why bother with the decentralization theater? Just build a fully permissioned system and do KYC. No such thing as a system that’s only trustless when things go well.
In the last 48 hours, @near_intents: > Detected and blocked stolen funds from an exchange hack > Got exploited, patched within hours. $3.8M lost, all being refunded CEX hacks (~$5B) and bridge exploits (~$3.7B) have been the two worst loss vectors in crypto. Refreshing to see a team take ownership of crypto's biggest weakness.

The Chads are talking, so we're putting the spotlight on them. A THORChain Community Spotlight, where a different voice from the community tells us their story ⚡🧵 This time, we're talking with @BooneW, who kicked off THORChain's Monero integration and built boone.tools/status, a data site for the network.

Things can explode fast for $RUNE. @THORChain is one of the few protocols still fighting for the core values on which crypto was originally built. Permissionless, trustless finance. Add privacy on top of this with the upcoming integrations, and it ticks all the boxes. You're not ready for when the OGs wake up on this.

thorchain:native is getting pulled into the protocol instead of leaking out as a bigger burn. @THORChain cut the system-income burn from 5% to 1% and sent that 4% to node rewards. same fee stream, more of it now pays the operators who bond capital. > ~$39m bonded at ~13% apr from real swap flow > 20% of income also buys owned pool depth, parking rune out of float > lifetime swaps at $125B, august wallets still +57% > monero and zcash stay behind the stability gate, right order after the restart security, inventory, and yield on the same token.

Replying to @THORChain
@THORChain has earned swap fees since 2021 but only gets coverage when something breaks. It now has a revenue page on @Blockworks: network revenue, cross-chain swap volume, active bonded value, pool liquidity. Finally getting the attention it deserves!

$RUNE could be at the start of the most hated recovery rally CT has ever seen. The fundamentals line up: ▫️ Zero inflation ▫️ One of the top protocols in terms of revenue ▫️ @THORChain owns the liquidity; most others rent it. So no user funds at risk. ▫️ $XMR and $ZEC integration on the horizon, making it the only truly trustless, permissionless privacy DEX

THORChain's own pools run on a simple formula called XYK (x*y=k): liquidity gets spread across every price from zero to infinity, with no way to concentrate it where trading happens. @RujiraNetwork, the app layer, offers another possibility: Custom Concentrated Liquidity (CCL), live with six presets so you don't have to design a custom range yourself. Set a lower range where you're fine holding all base token, an upper range where you're fine holding all quote token. Liquidity works on its own between the two. -Passive spans -99.5% to +2000%, closest to XYK, built to set and forget -Wide runs -50% to +100%, for volatile pairs -Tight tracks the 90-day range, a fit for stablecoins or pairs like WBTC -One-sided Lower only works below cost, for accumulating into weakness -One-sided Higher only works above it, for taking profit into strength -Copy (coming soon) mirrors the current top performer No need to build a custom range from scratch. Pick the preset that fits a market view, and it runs itself.

A whale is buying a lot of bitcoin:native through @THORChain today. It has acquired 126.4 bitcoin:native for $10.1M $USDC. The interesting part: This isn't a random wallet. It's the same whale @lookonchain tracked accumulating $143M of $ETH in 2024.

🚨 $RUNE JUST GOT A NEW TOKENOMIC CATALYST. THORChain’s Protocol-Owned Liquidity is now live. ⚡ Around 20% of system income is directed toward liquidity 🔥 Part of that liquidity is held in $RUNE 📈 Network usage can translate into structural token demand This is bigger than a simple price pump. $RUNE could be entering a new tokenomics phase. Watching closely? 👀 #RUNE #THORChain #DeFi #Crypto #Altcoins
