Basketball is played WITH the basketball 5% of the time.
One of my favorites quotes from Billy Donovan is:
‘The other 95% of the time most players spend trying to get the basketball’.
Players also can’t conceptualize the amount of time they have the ball in their hands in a game. They think it’s exponentially more than it actually is.
The ball is glorified, and rightfully so, but what are we doing with the other 95%?
Do be ELITE REQUIRES impacting the game without the basketball.
The video below is a MUST WATCH for all players and coaches 👇

Simply put:
When I plan to teach, I'm focused on what I will be saying, instructing, assigning, & assessing.
But when I design for learning, I'm focused on what learners will be discussing, engaging with, creating evidence for, self-assessing.
Learning isn't about me.

Norm #3 (phone free schools) is happening at lightning speed.
Norm #1 (no smartphones until age 14) is happening too, as parents and school districts take collective action. Great example in the UK:
Great news, and I have no doubt @JonHaidt will delighted too.

Excellent read.
If smartphones and social media are so safe for our kids, then why do tech company leaders work so hard to protect their own children from a phone-based childhood?

Such a clear discussion of why we need to regulate. If we care about young people and their future, we need to act now. #socialmedia #phonefree
Australia will lead the world in setting a minimum age for social media, finally requiring the companies to take responsibility for age verification.
Here South Australia's Premier Peter Malinauskas explains why and how they are taking action:

With some parents using tablets as digital pacifiers to soothe their children, a new study finds preschoolers who spend 75 minutes or more in front of a screen showed increased anger and frustration as they got older, along with difficulties in regulating their emotions.

Here's a great metaphor for what happened when kids suddenly got smartphones, from economist Michael Munger: It's like giving kids a magic food bag with always-fresh junk food, hanging from their necks

There are now multiple studies showing that a heavily phone-based childhood changes the way the adolescent brain wires up, in many ways including cognitive control and reward valuation. Here's a review of them:
NEW STUDY: Adolescents with internet addiction experience changes in the brain that could lead to other addictive behaviors and tendencies
Yet more findings in line with @JonHaidt's warnings in The Anxious Generation.

Unstructured play time for children has decreased 25% since the 1980's. Children need playtime at home and school. Their mental, physical, social, and emotional wellness depend on it. Give children recess and playtime!

I would recommend this read for all educators and parents. We do need to end the phone-based childhood now! @JonHaidt lays out very clearly what we can do and the impacts of what we have been doing. I have shifted my thinking quite a bit on this topic. #middleschool #phonefree
As we approach Mother's Day in the US, I want to share a thought. Many of us and our students have lost our mothers and this holiday can be one that is challenging. Be compassionate and be kind. #MothersDay #middleschool
