🎉 Congrats to PhD student Sahir Gagan @sahir_gagan from my group for publishing in ES&T! His new paper quantifies the atmospheric lifetime, aging, and CCN activity of nanoplastic particles, a major step in examining their atmospheric/climate process.

Tijuana River sewage isn’t just a water problem, it also impacts air quality. I've fought for several years to address this, securing hundreds of millions in federal funds. We're working in a bipartisan way towards a solution.
Can't happen fast enough.

Cross-border pollution isn’t just harming our environment — it’s threatening our neighbors’ health, shutting down businesses, and closing beaches. Thank you to @SenBooker for joining us to see firsthand what our communities are dealing with and why we’re continuing to fight for real solutions and lasting protections.

Going down to meet @SenBooker ... so cool that this happens the day after our paper dropped....

Our communities deserve nothing less than clean water and clean air to breathe! We've secured over half a billion in federal funds to combat pollution, but this is why we've called for a state of emergency, funding for air quality monitoring, and CDC research. We won't let up.

Our paper just came out in Science Advances showing the chemicals in the air in Imperial Beach (many aerosolized from the polluted Tijuana River). Thanks to the entire team-especially Prof. Nate Slade and his (then) graduate student (now Dr.) Adam Cooper.

Excited to share our new perspective paper in ES&T on atmospheric micro- & nanoplastic particles! 🧪
We cover recent advances & future directions in this emerging area. Great collaboration with Nate Slade, Arthur Chan & Andy Ault!

Our recent work published in @EnvSciTech by Dr. Ryan Tumminello examines the role of divalent cation enrichment, surface tension, and the Kelvin effect on sea spray aerosol bounce fraction and estimated viscosity! @UCSDChemBiochem

🚨 New paper just dropped 🚨
Excited to share a new paper in ES&T from @SladeGroupUCSD about sea spray bounce fractions and viscosity!!
Key points include:
1) 40nm particles had 3x bounce factor than 100nm
2) Kelvin effect/density more impactful than RH

Organic #UVFilter oxybenzone (BP3) persists longer in seawater, but undergoes rapid photodegradation upon transfer to sea spray #aerosol (SSA), resulting in the generation of toxic photoproducts. @UCSDChemBiochem @UCSanDiego

Our recent work published in @EnvSciTech by @ChemCooper examines the photo-initiated degradation of organic UV filters compared to SSA mimics under solar simulated light. @UCSDChemBiochem pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs…
Recent work published in Environ. Sci. Atmos. by Lincoln Mehndiratta, uses measurements done in the Grassian group with a Raman microscope; studying immersion ice nucleation behavior of lipid particles, also examining how phase and droplet size influence this process!
Earlier this month we had a wonderful time hosting the 40th annual Informal Gathering of Atmospheric Sciences and Photochemistry Conference (IGASP). Thank you to everyone who came out to participate! @UCSDChemBiochem
Our recent work published in @an_chem by @SamKruse_ used data collected at SeaSCAPE 2019 as a part of @CAICECCI to show how EESI-ToF sensitivity is dependent on particle phase state. @UCSDChemBiochem
Congratulations to Dr. Paul Ryan Tumminello! Ryan will be continuing his research career as a postdoctoral scholar with Jim Burkholder at @NOAA

If you're in #imperialbeach, we are looking for volunteers to help us place air quality sensors around. It's crucial to understand what is in the air so we can properly tackle this cross-border sewage crisis together. Sign up at airborne.ucsd.edu/citizen-sc…
