This should be our Dunblane moment. Only with social media not guns.
@elonmusk is a feckless billionaire whose algorithms pose an imminent threat to life. He won’t act. So it’s critical that we now do.

A Russia-linked site helped foment the riots in the UK this weekend by falsely naming the Southport knife killer as a Muslim immigrant, when in fact he was born in Britain to Christian parents telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08…

1. I work as a consultant cardiologist in a large tertiary centre providing care over 1 million people.
➡️ There are 30 of us, and 70% of Cardiologists in my unit including myself are either immigrants themselves or the sons and daughters of immigrants
➡️ many of my colleagues are Muslims who provide care to you and your families
➡️ whilst a minority are out rioting, flashing Nazi signs beating up people of colour many of whom look after their families- including their elderly relatives- the majority of the good people of UK are sickened by these individuals who do not represent us as a country.

Trump: I didn’t cut Social Security, remember?
(Fact check: Trump introduced a budget to cut Social Security and Medicare every single year he was in office. The reason it didn’t happen was because Democrats stopped him)

People who have been hectoring Dems for being hysterical about Trump's 'threat to democracy' sure look pretty smart right about now. Surely he won't keep doubling down on this. Surely.

The final version of our paper on PfRH5-targeting antibodies from people naturally infected with malaria is now out in Cell. Pioneered by @Lewreate7, @andrewcooperajr and Josh Tan, who identified these antibodies. It was a pleasure for @brendanfarrell and I to contribute.
New review out in @ScienceMagazine from Jacob Wilde and Kevin Foster, that I had the honor to meddle in as the resident immunologist.
What possibilities do hosts have to influence their microbiomes?
May contain pandas...
Enjoy!

The most dangerous grift in ophthalmology right now is “glasses are harmful.” People that claim diet, exercise, and a 10 part instructional webinar can help you live spectacle free! No. Stop it.
It’s not a big deal for most adults. They will lose some money before realizing that no amount of exercise and bull testicle consumption will fix their presbyopia.
But those same adults have kids. If young kids don’t get the glasses they need, their brains won’t develop normal vision. I’m talking permanent vision loss. I have seen it happen. It’s awful and entirely preventable.

Almost a decade after proposing this experiment in a grant application, we have a preprint! A huge experiment by @PhilippePiccar1 with many helping hands to generate and analyze the data especially genomic & transcriptomic analysis by Eric Ulrich! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

My layman's two cents re Kamala's pitch to America:
It's desperately important that her campaign understands that undecided voters don't believe the fascism talk. Those voters have a decade of evidence about Trump's inclinations. If they don't believe it by now, they won't. 1/

Very happy to present our latest preprint @NCCRMicrobiomes @DMF_UNIL in collaboration with @simon_vanvliet. @PignonEstelle engineered uptake and leakage rates in communities of E. coli amino acid auxotrophs and studied the effects on spatial arrangement and composition.

🌱 does anyone who had successfully applied for an ERC StG has an OLD proposal to share? Even if in a completely different research field? Would be super helpful and I’d be super grateful ☺️🌸 #ERC #StartingGrant
