Thanks to Lynneth Miller for the invite to contribute this month!
Today at The Anxious Bench—
The tumult of life and the times can drive us to deep anguish. How can the practice of doing history—with a focus on emotion, location, and rhythms of labor and rest—help us keep the faith?

Correctly selecting all the images that contain bicycles *on the first try* in order to prove I am not a robot is more difficult than writing a dissertation.
I said what I said.
Endless thanks to @BaylorHistory and my advisor, Elesha Coffman, for helping guide this project to the finish line!
“As another great poet, Brandon Flowers, once wrote…” —something I just heard myself say while discussing the serpent’s temptation of Eve in Paradise Lost
Thanks to @j_rhett for the invite to contribute the @anxious_bench this month!

A quick update: I’m excited to share that I’ve accepted a position as Assistant Professor of History at @JohnBrownUniv, where I’ll start later this summer.
After 9 years @BaylorHistory, I’ll miss Waco deeply, but am thrilled to be joining the warm and wonderful folks at JBU!
I can never decide if these campus food delivery robots are more utopian or dystopian.
If the latter, I can confirm that the road to dystopianism is paved with convenience and Chick-fil-a…and ushered in by harried academics in the throes of pre-midterm grading.
That’s a wrap on this semester’s 1960s course. I’m equal parts proud of and encouraged by these students, who navigated weighty historical topics so carefully and thoughtfully (aided by excellent conversation partners like @DanielKWilliam4, @Randall_Stps, & @LivedTheology)
If you’re an academic looking to get your heart rate up a couple times a week you could take up running or also utilize your institution’s inter-library loan services
It’s the most wonderful time of the year in “The U.S. in Global Perspective”: New Wave & the Close of the Cold War
(Complete with an interview with my mother, who offered us a vivid and hilarious firsthand account of 1980s new wave fandom.)
Still can’t believe this is my job.
As an update, the students encountered the Beatles, Velvet Underground, et al w/out descending into open revolt
They have, however, countered our objectively Good class playlist below w/ a rival Swift selection in an attempt to convert my musical soul🤦🏼♀️ spotify.link/fSpyhDgs3Db
Accidentally disclosed to my upper-level 1960s course that I am no fan of Taylor Swift, thereby burning through in an instant the relational capital I spent 8 week weeks building.
Against this backdrop, the stakes are high for 60's Music Day today. Thoughts & prayers appreciated
2017 eclipse: 1st day of PhD. @_annajwells_ & I enjoy an auspicious start to our scholarly journeys
2023 eclipse: Knee deep in the spoils/consequences of said journeys, we pull ourselves away from hundreds of ungraded midterms & applications long enough to witness a 2nd eclipse
9:01 pm: Being tacitly judged by Microsoft Outlook was not on the agenda for today, but here we are.
On a day when the first-time 4/4 + job market combo felt particularly heavy, the sweetest surprise from the greatest department 🐻 @BaylorHistory
Honored to have graduated from @BaylorHistory yesterday, & so moved to reflect on the excellent teaching, mentorship, & support I received there along the way.
I’m thrilled to be staying on at Baylor this year as a postdoctoral teaching fellow. 1/2
Just as importantly, my endless gratitude to the family, friends, and colleagues who supported me emotionally, intellectually, spiritually (and, in the final weeks of the dissertation, culinarily) over the last six years. 2/2
(apropos of the above photo, grad weekend MVP goes to @E_E_Marvel for hosting a soiree that bore the hallmarks of a truly successful fete...in this case, mysterious clothing stains and abandoned footwear at night's end)
