Canada is a sovereign country. We will decide who we trade with and how we build our future. It’s of no surprise that President Trump is now lashing out at the prospect of Canada increasing our trade ties with Europe. His response is next level fear of missing out. He has an option: stop being a bully and maybe you’ll get invited back to the party. I am proud that Canada is spreading our wings. Nova Scotia has a long history of trade with the world. Two major Canadian banks - Scotiabank and RBC - were founded in our province to help our entrepreneurs, traders and explorers do business with the world. We have a long history of trade and travel with Europe specifically. Expanding access for Canadian goods to European markets is a good thing, as is strengthening our defence ties with the region. Nova Scotia will always value our friendship with the American people. We value our historic ties to New England in particular. But this friendship cannot mean dependence on a country whose administration has become increasingly unpredictable towards its allies. We’re ready to work with Europe and every reliable partner who wants what Nova Scotia has to offer. We will not be bullied by those who look to oppress us. My focus will continue to be on protecting our future and building Nova Scotia.
