My Take Streaming was sold as the cheap alternative to cable. $4.99 here, $6.99 there, cancel anytime. Now Apple alone costs $15, Netflix runs $17.99 for standard, and if you subscribe to four or five services you're paying $70 to $80 a month, which is what cable cost before everyone cut the cord. The industry spent years burning cash to undercut cable pricing and acquire subscribers, and now that the subscribers are locked in and the competition is dead, the prices go up. Every year. And nobody's cancelling because the shows they want are spread across six different apps. RAM gets hoarded so your next laptop costs more and the cloud subscription looks reasonable. Disney cuts healthcare benefits during a record year. Delta uses AI to find the maximum you'll pay for a seat. Streaming services triple their prices once there's nowhere else to go.
