“An artist does not live a personal life as we do...underneath all his preoccupations...there is, quite simply, a man tortured beyond endurance by the lack of tenderness in the world.” Clea writes to the narrator in Lawrence Durrell's Justine.
“This is the way this machine has to operate” says @barneyronay in this visceral takedown of the ultimate effect on football, with Man U the prime example, of the pursuit of money above all else. theguardian.com/football/202…

Ernest Hemingway, looking much like many of us probably do at home with our wives.
They're culling the inestimable Winifred Robinson and keeping the raft of abysmally unfunny "comedians" who loiter on the bandwidth in the early evening. Utterly unserious broadcaster.

I love that book. The image of him down on the rocks in the sea with a notebook and pen, trying to write down how the sea is speaking…

Having just seen both de Gaulle films, it was striking to read in The Cauldron by @simonmontefiore how Mohammed V of Morocco resisted the Vichy attempts to round up Jews. "There are no Jews in Morocco. Just Moroccans...I absolutely don't approve of the new antisemitic laws."
Really interesting conversation, where @ProfSteveKeen draws a comparison between the control of AI and the control of water in the UK since privatisation, making a case for public ownership of AI development — slow and boring being better than fast and inventive!

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, you could get this dish in cafes all over Soho: liver, bacon, onions, chips, beans, gravy. Now, not a single outlet serves it. So every so often, I have to make it myself to remind myself of how well we lived.
Thanks to the recommendation from @ClarkeMicah I went to see the new French de Gaulle film today, based on Julian Jackson's remarkable biography which I read a couple of years ago. The film is outstanding and very moving, an inspirational triumph of courage and commitment.

"Like it or not, everything comes back to Taiwan. America knows it. China knows it. Only the mainstream media, as usual, have missed the bleeding obvious."
Forget the AI race, trade or rare earths. Donald Trump’s meeting with Xi Jinping was about one thing: Taiwan. The potential for military conflict over this small democratic nation is what keeps both up at night, says James Woudhuysen
