I love how nostalgia pilled Players are, they dream about interaction heavy ressource management back-and-forth games when in reality 10 years back the two most played modern decks were stuff like KCI and Dredge

I think the fundamental change in Magic over its lifespan is that it was originally a resource management game but over time and for a whole bunch of reasons it evolved into an engine building game.

Every time a new tcg comes out they ramp up tournament prizing and every magic player loses their mind why mtg has low prizing. And every tournament scene of new tcgs dies out after couple of years. Maybe there is a correlation, not sure.

i've seen people speculate a lot on what really happened and i think it's this simple: UB sets have to be painted digitally so that the artists can't sell the originals. they forced an 80-year old oil painter to learn photoshop under time pressure. that's how you get THIS

It always baffles me that the main competitive format isnt booster draft. Its 2 games in 1, its skilly in gameplay and deckbuilding, its fun with 4-8 players which satisfies the itch of community lot of players want and you NEED to buy booster to play which is perfect for WotC
