Happy to share the cover of my new book, Fed Reckoning: Conversations on America’s Central Bank (@yalepress, @YPFSatYale, Jan. 2027). A critical examination of the Federal Reserve, told by the policymakers, economists, and observers who know it best.
In The Conversation, Paul Wachtel and I remember Alan Greenspan, who died yesterday at 100. We draw on my interview with him and reveal a more complex and self-aware figure than his public reputation suggested.

Big moment for Kevin Warsh- he's been wanting to come back to the Federal Reserve for years and, in particular, become Fed chair.
Warsh did't get the job during President Trump's first term when he was overlooked for Jerome Powell. He was just sworn in to become the next chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Here's how he and his allies made a push for a job Warsh has been gunning to have.

Kevin Warsh’s ascension to the top of the world’s most powerful central bank marks the culmination of a twisting professional and ideological odyssey, as @ianwardreports and I wrote in this profile of him earlier this year:

In today's The Conversation, Paul Wachtel and I examine how communication at the Federal Reserve may evolve under Kevin Warsh's leadership. The article draws on my interview with Warsh for my forthcoming book, Fed Reckoning (Yale University Press):

I would be remiss in not thanking @SimonBowmaker, who sent me an unreleased interview he did with Warsh for his forthcoming book (which I believe is coming out early next year), and it gave us a ton of color to work with!
The odds seem stacked against Kevin Warsh, but the carefully crafted career path he has traveled up to this point suggests he is perhaps uniquely situated to pull off being Trump’s Fed chair
A portrait of him, by me & the very talented @ianwardreports

Echoes of the 1970s. Switzerland pioneered negative interest rates in the 70s after the US suspended dollar convertibility into gold, the RoW questioned the dollar's reserve currency status and capital inflows into CH caused the franc to appreciate.
h/t to @m_maggiori who spoke about this at the Hoover conference on monetary policy last Friday.

Happy birthday F.A. Hayek, born on this day in 1899.
It is a good opportunity to read or reread his essay “The Use of Knowledge in Society”, which @tylercowen called “the single greatest economics article ever written.”
