Ethiopia Warns Somaliland Recognition Could Fuel Al-Shabaab Threat
NAIROBI, Kenya (Somali Report) - Ethiopia’s ambassador has warned that recognizing Somaliland could increase the threat posed by Al-Shabaab, following a televised debate with Somaliland’s representative to Israel.
In an interview with i24NEWS, Ethiopian Ambassador Tesfaye Yetayeh Anteneh said Somalia would demand Ethiopia’s withdrawal from its territory, potentially exposing Somalia, Somaliland and Ethiopia to increased militant attacks.
Somaliland’s ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Hagi, challenged that assessment, pointing to Somaliland’s strategic benefits and its record of counterterrorism operations since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991.
